Turbo setup ok?
Hey, I'm new to the whole turbo world, I know how they work, what they do, but not much beond that. So please please bare with me. A guy in my class is selling the turbo off of his 1998 Mustang GT because it was causing his insurance to go up to high, I forgot the name of the turbo manufacture, but I wanted to know if I would run into trouble installing on a 88RX7 (NA) I know, drivetrain needs to be upgraded, that's ok, getting a rebuild soon, and before I install the turbo anyways. I'll be getting S5 rotors installed. with S4housing(s) (assuming they are in spec).
OK the details about the turbo, again, I dont remember the name, (I'll post it when I talk to him on Friday, he's giving me the manual to look at) Anyways, it has 24k on it, it's water cooled, can run a max of 16psi and still make good power. external wastegate. comes with a BOV, and intercooler, and boost gauge all for 3300. the turbo orginally cost 12,600. But the orginal owner sold it to they guy I'm buying it from because he was trading his car in and they were giving him less because of the turbo. As the story goes, he sold it to him for 6k with everything, and he installed it, but as I said before once he added it to his insurance policy he couldn't afford it.
And he wasn't in a hurry to dump it off, but we were talking about racing and I asked, and I offered him 3300 for everythings.
SO finally I guess this is my question, 1) is this too much boost for my car (aiming to run 8psi) by this I mean, if the turbo caps at 16psi and I'm basically aiming to run half of that at red line will I experence alot of turbo lag? in other wards is too much of a good thing, bad?
2) aside from what mods I've mentioned are the other possible problems to look at? I know the clutch has to be changed....
3) how much would it cost to get something like this rebuilt? Because I was thinking I could use it as an investment, buy it for 3300, and have it rebuilt then sell it for 10k.... any ideas?
I guess in finally, my arguement is that for 3300 this is a hell lot better of a deal then what I would get if I wanted to go from NA to turbo, even if I just bought a TII short block with turbo mounded and ready to go.... I've priced doing a proper TII conversion around 5-6k, and tac on a extra FMIC... and that's just parts, no labor. Places I would be looking at for doing this crazy overhaul would be KDR, Kevin Landers (then tuned by KDR, or RX7store.com)

Don't do it its a bad idea. I have never heard of a turbo kit costing 10K unless it was a high end twin turbo kit, and not even HKS GT28/35 Twin Turbo kits are that much. You could buy a turbo, wastegate, manifold, etc. etc. all for $1000, obviously you don't know what you are getting into. Before you go any further do some research about turbocharging.

What 12,600? have they got diamonds fitted in them?
The guys trying to rob you, don't buy it.
You can get a brand new turbo kit made to FIT you car for the money he wants.

Keep in mind that if he says his turbo is raising his insurance prices, he's probably lying. Unless he's a complete doofus and has reported his 600rwhp to the Insurance Company

the biggest part of turboing an na besides what you have listed is basically going with a ful standalone ems. im sure there are ways around that but that is what i woudl reccomend along with a full fuel system.
