Turbo rattling, motor wasted? cant tell, read here.

I have this weird rattling noise coming from the engine.

I thought the motor was grenaded, but it idles perfectly, so I cant see that being possible. I still havent gotten around to a compression check.

There seems to be some side to side shaft play, about 1/16 of an inch left to right. Seems like a lot to me, theres no forward or back movement, so I dont know if its the bearings that are wasted, or if it sounds like the impeller or exducer is hitting the housing.

Anyway, what could say it better than this video I made right?

Please let me know what you think.

(PS You can here the sound in the background, almost sounds like someone rattling a spoon in a teacup...)

Couldn't really hear anything out of the ordenary in the vid, I don't know what I'm looking / trying to hear. The shaft play does look a bit excessive. You can put side force on the turbo shaft and turn it feeling if its hiting housings. Put side force in all directions, but what I mean is, put some side force on the left, and while putting pressure on it turn it at the same time. Then put pressure on the right and while holding pressure against it turn it, then up/down etc. If you feel or hear any metal to metal its toast and could be the sorce of your noise. Make sure theres nothing that could be possibly loose and making the noise (like heat shields etc).

Did you see houw the turbo wasnt really spinning freely at idle though?

Seems like it should be going to town.

Ill see if I can hear it scraping anything.

Thats all fine and dandy if the turbo is wasted, im just hoping its whats making the rattling noise, not anything in the motor.

The turbo can be rebuilt (hopefully). Maybe a hybrid in the future.
