i dont think he was saying which are the top 5 best turbos to use. just basing the "top 5" on what people are actually running on their cars. (i.e. most popular top 5)

500r is suppose to be really good for the street... I love the R85 though. Slight lag, very nice kick though...

T78's were the rage about 5 years ago. Mainly because they were one of the first kits out for the 7. Nothing wrong with it and I ran it on both my 7's.
Today, most people are going for a faster spooling turbo that will still give them good HP. GT35R, T04R and T04Z are what I sell the most of right now.

In my opinion, the most popular turbo in US right at the moment is the GT35- range. They are so many ppl. jumping onto the GT35 train which depart about 4 years ago and they are so many ppl. out of US which go the same route.

but what is the second most popular turbo? I don't think it is R85, and not T78 or T70. Them are to laggy for many ppl out there.

When I look into the "post your single turbo here" thread, I notice that most ppl ar using the T04S aka 60-1 turbos. I would say, that this is the second popular turbo for RX-7.

Third, hard to say, but probably the T04R or the T78. Both in the same power- range, and the T04R come just after theT04S era when ppl where screaming for more!

fifth? hard to say!

So what would you say?

well I think there are a ton of people who have the 60-1 from years back but now that turbo is some what dated with a lot better turbo choices out there. The gt35r is the same size as a 60-1 though correct? For most people that wheel is perfect because you don't need a ton of boost to create some good power.

Pop wise I don't think my r85 is anywhere near up there, but I think it's one of the better of the bigish turbos... I only know of 3 or 4 other people running them... I'd say the gt35 series is #1 then it's guess work from there... the 500r seems to be picking up momentum... the T04 series is very popular too. t-78 is popular cause it's a big turbo thats been around for a while...not cause it's the best in its class.
also hybrids are getting really popular... gt35/40r being a good choice.

Interesting list,

does depend alot on what you will be using the car for though surely ?

I did have a T78 on my last rx7 and now have the Apexi RX-6 unit, the TO4-R is similar in size and output as the T-78, but recently a few people have been running the TO4-Z unit ?

The T88 was a fav a while ago but the lag issue was too great, i think its really hard to number the best unit ? in different catogories it would make more sense ie Streetable / Drag / Track

i've settled on getting the T04R (possilbly the Z), but i'm curious. what about the T04R in your experience made it unstreetable? what's your port configuration and turbine A/R? i think this is an on-topic question, but if you feel it will mess up the thread, you can PM me your answer.

My post was a little missleading. Like I said I was very pleased with the T04R And It was in no way "unstreetable or too laggy". That being said...I have a good sized street-port( not as aggressive on the primaries though) And the turbo was a 1.0 A/R. I just wanted it to spool a little bit sooner and was planning on just swapping to a smaller A/R. But with the boost levels I was running (under 17 psi) I wasn't quite where I wanted to be in the turbos efficiency range. With the GT3574 I plan on staying around the same boost levels MAYBE just a BIT higher with AI of course.

But I'm wanting to set the car up for some road course action but I still wanna be able to tackle a tight, technical auto-x course.

I don't know what you plan to do with your car but I'm sure you'll be happy with the turbo . Good luck

miscommunication, i guess.

i know exactly what you mean now and even more, you've cemented my choice of the T04R. thanks for clarifying. i think you're making the right choice for your autocross goals. good luck with your car, too.
