Thoughts on a custom turbo
Hey guys,
So my FD build is going down in short order, and while I'm beyond words excited to be back in the FD game after 18 months out of the 3rd gen( still pushing the 2nd's though). So no it starts again. My last FD was making around 400 to the wheels. and for a time I was happy, but unfortunately I was bitten with the boost bug. So it's more power for me. This time around I was originally considering a HKS T51R Kai SPL turbo in 1.15 A/R, but after much calculation and not being able to figure out a way to hide the cost from the wife ; I decided to take another route.
For months now I've had a p trim 60-1 dual ball bearing CHRA sitting on my desk. Sometimes I stare at it sometimes I just ignore it. But tonight I decided to use it. My problem with the T51R is that it takes far too long to spool, but it does deliver the power I want( 550- 625). The P trim wheel will spool significantly faster than the Q trim of the T51 and the compressor side is basically a T70. So my question is for those of you who love doing math more than I do. Is this a good idea for a reasonably fast spooling custom turbo ( 3500- 7500 ish) , or just build something in the GT42R range with the CHRA. And if so what are your ideas. If not I'm just going to sell the CHRA and buy something more appropriate.

Also while I'm thinking about this. What about a water to air intercooler running with an external radiator w/ fan mounted on the left side of my diffuser. There isn't anything there, so I could tuck it out of the way, and possibly minimize heat soak with a 20 Gallon pump. Or take it further and run alcohol which has better thermal properties than water as I recall. This would be a closed loop system with no or a very small tank mounted in the rear bin. .
