Thinking of going single, Turbo that is!
Hey guys, I have been thinking about going single this spring/ summer. Just waiting to see how much longer my motor (92k) is going to go. Anyway I just wanted to ask a few questions. First, What seems to be the best kit out there? Second, How noisy is a single turbo set up? I mean is the turbo noisy from the whinning or what? This is for a 3rd gen that is driven 1-2 times a week max!! Last, I am pretty knowledgable on my car but should or would it be better for me to take it to a shop like (pettit or rx7.com) to have to work done and tuned?? Thanks, Mike

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
and usually, single turbo FDs are much louder than ones with stock twins. mainly becasue most setups have the wastegate venting out, instead of back into the exhaust.

well
Well I do not want a drag car! I mean I will be going to the track with it but I will also be doing some regular driving as well as the occasional street race!! But I am looking for around 450+rwhp. As far as noise goes, I love to here a turbo spoil up. I do not know if a sigle will be over run by the exhaust or not??

I suggest start big. You will only end up going bigger later. I got the XST04E kit and i am already shopping for something bigger.
And it will be much louder, even if the wastegate is piped back in. Without piping the wastegate back in you can forget about it. It is REALLY LOUD.

I agree, If you are looking for 450+ RWHP... better start big and get someone to seriously tune it for you. I would recommend a T78 or equivalent size as a starter. Are you sure you need that much power? I make a little less than 450 RWHP and it is all that I need on the street.... I'm sure that any more power and it would become a serious safety hazard on the street.... tires breaking loose and the car sliding sideways when the boost hits.
I wondered when the first person who bought the T04E would fess up and say his turbo is too small. Shoot... My APEXi is too small.
I had my wastegate plumbed back into the downpipe... it was loud before... I recently cut and welded a cutout into my midpipe. You should hear it when I have the cutout cover off.... I swear you can hear me from atleast 2 miles away.

Stay away from the power FC unless you don't plan on tinkering with it.the Haltech is a far better choice but is more intensive install, but way worth it in the end I had both and will never go back to Power FC. your T78 will be too laggy for any real street driving but thats up to you.TO4R should get you your
450 HP under or around 4K and you could still hit 500 HP if you turned it up eff range of turbo is good up to 28lbs, 15lbs is reached by 32 to 3300rpm.

Hey Mike, whats up man. Its just never enought is it
Shoot me a email. Brian (ex Turbo Specialties builder) can build you a damn awsome turbo. he can custom build anything you want.
Sounds like with 98K your going to need a motor rebuild to go big single. If you run a Haltech you can run a wide band o2 all the time and data log it with the Haltech. That would be pretty awsome for a single turbo set up. I'd prob go with the Haltech for what your wanting.
Shoot me a email.

If you are shooting for 450 rwhp, I would go with either a T78 or T04R. I hope you are ready for that kind of power? I am hovering around 400 rwhp and it is scarey fast for the passenger. I actually have to drive the car a little going straight!!!
In my opinion, the point when the motor or exhaust is loud is when you start porting the motor. The single turbo will make it a little louder - all things being equal. The porting will really make it loud. Combine the two and you have a loud-*** car. It is a good sound though. And to think my wife spent all that money on a clear stereo??????

If you are going for 450rwhp the greddy t-78 is a good one. If you are going for a less laggy street setup with a ton of power down low I am trying to sell my apexi rx6 kit if you are interested. You will also want to tie your wastegate back into your exhaust, cause it is way too loud otherwise.

You need to ask yourself one serious question first; have you driven a FAST car before for a decent length of time? A standard 3rd Gen is not fast.
If you answered YES to the above question, proceed to A. If you answered NO to the above question, proceed to B.
A - A T78 kit is at the top of the tree. Outright HP is the goal with this kit. I'm sure one of the guys here could suggest some more suitable kits that provide good HP without compromising low end drivability.
B - Learn to drive a fast car otherwise you will wrap yourself around a large immovable object. Once you can drive a car with a bit of poke, upgrade. It might take a while, but I'm sure your life is worth it.
