Tech Question on the J&S Knock Unit

I was talking with John at J&S and he told me that his unit retards the leading ignition. The unit is setup to either retard timing at 10 degrees or 20 degrees.
My question is wouldnt it be dangerous to retard the leading timing if someone was running an 8 split between the leading and trailing? If it retards the timing 10 degrees wouldnt that cause a negative split and the trailing would fire before the leading and blow the motor?

Thanks
Jason

One would think that the J&S should retard both leading and trailing so that it wouldn't muck with your split as indicated. Maybe you should call John back and confirm it ONLY retards the leading. If he says, yes, ask HIM WTF if you run 8 degrees (or less) of split...

hahaha
I did. He said it only retards the leading and I mentioned there were alot of us that were decreasing our split. He didnt seem to know much about split, but said he didnt think the trailing firing before the leading caused any problems.

"He didn't seem to know much about split" - ya, that is pretty apparent by him thinking that firing trailing BEFORE leading wouldn't cause any problems...

maybe you should set it up so that it only lights the lights (muppet style?), and doesnt retard so much that it fires the trailing first

I agree. I have emailed John several times asking him for the wiring Diagram between the E6K, and MSD6AL ,a and the TII Coils. It's been over 2 months and still no reply.

I have a feeling when I finish, I am just going to mount it to let me know about knock rather than trying to "fix" it and screwing up even more.

If I was running a distributor, it would be a different story though.
