T78/88 Compressor housings

Is there a trick to getting that damn ring back in place to put the compressor back on? Kind of works like a snap ring only with a bolt for tension. I swear every time i take the compressor off, it takes me 3 hours to get it back on when it feels like it should take 2 minutes. I had to go back in the house last night after ******* with it for fear of smashing something with a crowbar.

I guess I'm the only idiot that struggles with this. I ended up taking one of those big clamps used for woodworking to hold the compressor housing tight against the turbo. Worked like a charm.

no...your not alone. I did mine just today. I took it off to clean it and just like you I had a hard time putting it back on. The big Snap ring was a little crooked so I straigtened it out as best I could. But yea you got the right idea for installing it back on. Make sure you just spray a light coat of lubricant where the rubber seal is and clamp the compressor housing onto the turbo assembly tight and the snap ring should go right into the groove.

I've seen a few guys damage the Greddy turbos by not installing that snap ring properly. Even when you think it's in properly it's sometimes not.

I use a flathead and lightly tap on the ring to push it in. As it falls into place I release the screw with adds more tension and then tap again until it "snaps" into place. I keep doing this until I have very little thread left.

Before taking it off next time just remember how much thread should be showing so you get an idea of how much you need to tap.

Not sure if this is what you meant.

Anthony

It is Anthony. For me it was finding a way to hold the compressor housing onto the turbo tight enough so the ring had room to get the beveled edge into the lip, once it was past that, the whole ring snapped in and you couldn't see the beveled edge on the ring on the entire circumference.

Take the clamp completely off. Spray Liquid wrench or wd40 and let soak. Apply a few more times and let soak. Start with small flathead and work your way around, a few taps at a time. Before reinstalling clean properly.
