T51 Garret and HKS
Hi guys, tried searching but mostly what I found is the HKS T51 Kai but nothing on the Garret T51. Just want to know if there is any significant difference between this turbo. Thx
I don't understand what you're asking for.
The HKS T51R is a specialty turbo made by Garrett specifically for HKS.
The compressor sections are available as Garrett GT42 wheels.
Garrett will not release the HKS T51R turbine side to you; this is proprietary to HKS only by contract.

I think he is referring to the TA/TV51 garretts....
The first Hks t51, which shares the same specs as the T51r Kai, is called a T51s , and says "garrett" right on the front cover, but has a HKS turbine side...and thats what differentiates them from the TA/TV family of garrett turbos, some parts for that family can be used on the hks T51s, like the centre section vband, exhaust flange parts and straps.. Not to much is availabe for info on these "s" turbos, they were never an export turbo by HKS to other markets outside of Japan, Panspeed originally sold the turbo I have to an FD owner sometime in 92/93, they were not to forthcoming with the info about it, except that it made over 600ps at 1.5 kg/cm bar and some other rambling as I recall...
The wheel of the T51kai, has apparently been around forever and is from the large frame garrett family.... The problem with most of TA/Tv family is the exhaust side is rediculously huge for use on a small displacement gas engine... Some of the guys in Australia have found decent sized housings and used them on very aggressively ported motors with alot of success, what trim turbine wheel they ran, and where they got it, is not something I know... At the local turbo rebuilders I saw TA/TV turbos with the same comp wheel as T51s and kai, but the turbines on them were matched to 10-14 litre diesels....
Even the GT turbos have been around for along time, if you dig way back in diesel turbo application guides, you find the GT series turbos matched to oem applications on diesels as far back as 10 years ago, the S300 that BDC and 87GTR were running was a cheaper schwitzer crossrefernce for a GT40, and was designed to bolt in place of the GT40 ....Alot of turbo design is proprietary, and just because garrett makes, sometimes you can't buy it, or its not available as a aftermarket turbo for performance applications... I found that out when s300 shopping for my self, there were older GT ballbearing turbos and various s300's available, under alot of part numbers, but no specs/sizes , or a/r's were available to match them to a performance application, and you could not buy a turbo via part number unless you had an exact matching core to trade in, and thats Garrett protecting its performance aftermarket division and "putter togethers" like Turbonetics etc etc...It sucks there alot of really good turbo's for cheap, that you just can't buy

Just wanted to check if it is the same thing because there is quite a number of garret T51 over here with a M24 marking on the front. The main reason is because brand new it cost much lower than the hks T51 over here so just wondering if I can expect the same type of performace out of it compared to the hks.
