t04 rebuild

hey does anyone know how hard it is to rebuild a turbo? i have a t04 with a 60-1 wheel and i have shaft play. how much shaft play is still ok? i can move it like 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. i dont feel the fins hitting the sides but i cant spin it as fast as the car can . thanks in advance

Way WAY too much shaft play. There will always be a tiny bit of up/down side/side movement, but there shouldn'e be any back and forth movemet. Rebuilding isn't hard, jsut buy the correct kit. Luckily t3/t4 chra rebuilds are cheap and easy to come by. Just dissasemble and reasemble in revers order. Make sure you mark the position of the compressor wheel in relation to were it is on the shaft. When you reasemble make sure the compressor is clock in the same position as when you took it off. If there is any shaft wear buy a new turbine wheel and shaft. You can polish off the coked areas with a fine emory cloth. If theres any sign that either wheel be it compressor or turbine touched their housings there now junk. If the housings arent scared too bad you can reuse them. It is very imposrtant that you CLEAN every thing extremly well. No carbon/soot/ or coking should remain on ANY parts with the exception of the turbine housing. BTW, check eBay for t3/t4 rebuild kits. Make sure their geniune Garrett parts.

Is this thread legit? Theres no way you can get anywhere near that kind of play in any turbo unless a small nuclear device went of in it

I've seen many rebuild kits, are they pretty standard for T series turbos?
