t-78 rebuild

i have heard that it is a bitch to find a place to rebuild this greddy turbo, is this true. also i heard that greddy said we just sell them not rebuilt them. I am looking at eithor the t-78 or the to4x or s. which one will crate the most power at about 15psi. Thanks marc

Garretts are more efficient at that boost range.&nbsp I'd recommend a Garrett turbo over the Mitsubishi...

Good luck......Demetrios K. tried to get his T88 rebuilt from 4 different shops and that doesn't include shipping it to Greddy in Japan! And they still said no dice....Another reason why I didn't go with a Greddy kit.....

Uh... Huh?

I had my T-78 rebuilt last year when it started blowing oil. Took about a week for the turnaround, no problem. The shop I use did the R/R, though. I don't know where they sent it.

I even got the out of spec parts back in a little baggie...

Did they use genuine Mitsubishi turbo parts or punched out the housing and stuffed a Garrett wheel in there?

I had my T78 rebuilt at Majestic turbo in Waco, Texas. Cost 470.00 shipped. Did a great job! www.majesticturbo.com

I switched to a T60-1 and had my T78 rebuilt (oil leak) by this shop in Dallas (see attached) it has been sitting in my garage ever since. This shop does turbos for 18 wheelers and a number of well known tunner shops.
They did have to do a bit of searching to find the right parts but it only took 1-2wks, they do great work and as you can see they are very reasonable ($289.23).

BTW this turbo is for sale (just the turbo), <3k not installed since rebuild (like new)asking $1,200.

Eric,
How did the 2 compare? Since you kept the 60-1 I am assuming there is something you liked better about it?

I think it was Majestic that did mine, as well. I couldn't tell you what they replaced, and whether they replaced it with original parts or not.

I think it was a couple hundred dollars, I don't for sure. It was awhile ago, and I was having some other work done at the same time.

The T60-1 spools up 500-800 RPM faster than the T78, I don't really drag race my car so I havent run more than 17 PSI in years. I have dynoed both turbos and up to that boost the power was identical (aprox 400RWHP)except the T60 comes on a lot sooner(T60=3500-4000, T78=4000-4700). The boost response variations depend on max boost and gear selection, in every situatoin the T60 was at least 500 RPM quicker. I mainly use the car on road courses, the quicker spool made a significant improvment in lap times. The T60-1 also has a wet center(water cooling) which I have found helps turbo reliability under road race conditions.
IMO unless you plan on running a lot of boost >20psi with race gas the T78 is over kill.

Cool

James @ www.turbos.com rebuilt my T-78 and the turbo is working fine. If the other guys presented don't work for you, I recommend these guys.

i have heard of t78s punching out the compressor housing and installing a bigger and lighter garret wheel in there. anyone here done this and/or know some info on this? im looking for more high end but a decrease in spoolup time would be great.
