Stupid question, smoking?

So how do you tell if its the turbo is smoking or if its the motor?

Also... Does it smoke all the time? Or only after a hard run, after sitting for a few minutes etc?

Actually, I was recently wondering this too. I get the usual blue smoke through the tailpipe for several seconds when I start the car. Both the engine and the turbo are fresh, so I was curious what the culprit was...

we have found that the metering oil injectors are vacuum/pressure sensitive. we had one car that smoked at idle, took the caps off the oil injectors so they see atmopheric pressure, and presto no more smoke.

well silly him! turbo or engine diagnosis
1) proper way: take ic pipe off look for oil, if present could be compressor of turbo or pvc depending on pcv location. look at spark plugs, oil will leave a light brown thick residue. look at exhaust side of turbo, the turbine will also build up a light brown residue.

2) ghetto way: disconnect oil feed from turbo. plug feed line. hold compressor wheel still and start engine, look for smoke.

to tell if its the motor pull turbo mani from the block and rub your figures inside the motor . If you get oil on your fingures then it should be the motor burning oil( not 100% sure about this but Im pretty sure).
Also, it doesnt matter if the motor and turbos are new, I recently had a hayes motor that was burning oil after 100 miles. It all depends on who did the work.

If you're talking to me, I'm not consuming much at all. Definitely no more than the OMP should be metering. Just the nice big embarrassing puff at startup.

Im sorry I havent been back for a few days, thanks Setzep for answering those questions for me.

Ok it will smoke about 1 minute after starting, and continues, its greyish, foggy color, smells like gas/oil LOL The car is rich as hell.

When I remove the TB ducting theres oil in there, the spark plugs look dark in color, almost black.

I have restricted the oil supply going into the turbo to 5/64 in.

Im gonna redesign my oil drain on my turbo, I think that could be a problem, and Im curious if I added too much 2 cycle oil to it. Im gonna put some fresh unmixed gas in the tank and see if thats it...

I really beleive its the turbo, and it might be time for an upgrade, Wow I bet this turbo has 300 miles on it
