NY So i was street tuning today...

luckily nothing catastrophic happened. I was doing a street tune with my friend because the map was a little sloppy and rich in some areas. Then the wideband display suddenly locks at 15.1 AFR after a 4th gear pull, so i pull over and restart the car. wideband works again, so i do a 3rd gear pull to redline and the wideband locks again! So i see the LED blinking a code, and it's throwing a code 8. it's an innovate LC-1, so basically the sensor was out of it's temp range and i might have fried the sensor. I can't complain since it is only a few inches after the turbo and it was working for quite a while. So i will probably have to replace the sensor, get the $90 heatsink and reposition the sensor more downstream.

Then we pull over at a dunkin donuts to take a leak, come out and theres smoke billowing out from the side of my hood!! i opened the hood and there was a pinhole leak from a small coolant line that i capped off, pissing right onto the downpipe. So that session ended prematurely. We did get to smooth out the vacuum areas, and lean out the low boost area. Now i have to fix that leak.

you should have it more "downstream" anyways... personally that's where I prefer to put it. Keeps the sensor cooler, and lets the exhaust mix a bit better before getting read by the sensor/.

Yes, that's way too close to the turbo. I would move it to the portion of the downpipe that just hits the "ground level."

I hate the LC1's, I had the same issue and just moved it closer to the end of the downpipe and it was fine but I still hate that bosche sensor.

On what road were you tuning this car in 4th? What ECU is in the car?

I was tuning on the highway, yea i know i shouldn't be breaking the law. I am running a microtech LT-10s, GT35R, tuning 8-10 psi range. It does pull nice, just a little scared about tuning on pump fuels.

You are too close to the turbo as everybody has said. But have you by any chance recently upgraded the firm on the LC-1 to the ver 1.1? my lc-1 came with the ver 1.00, it was working fine, did and upgrade to ver 1.1 firmware and it started throwing the same error 8 code. flashed it back to the 1.00 and all was well. So you can look into that first before you go buy a new sensor, although you should still move it like 3' away from the turbo all the same.

thanks for the suggestion, arghx. i have ordered the block off plate for the lower intake coolant passage.

Blurr, i never did any software upgrades. i just installed it as it came. i will have a new bung welded in though. funny thing was on the innovate forum, there was this miata that was throwing that code and his was located right in front of the stock cat. maybe he coincidently had a bad sensor.

No not that, I was wondering what highway you tune in the NYC area. I was going to suggest going to Ocean Parkway if you are closer to Long Island. There are no cars ever around, road runs along the beach. Nice area, no one around.

Perhaps I am guilty of overkill in keeping the Bosch (LC-1) sensor cool.

I located it about the middle of the downpipe. Plenty of room there next to the tranny.

The sensor is installed in the big heat sink that Innovate sells.

On top of that, the washer on the heat sink was replaced with a 4.4" piece of 1/8" copper that was radiused into a "U" shape.

No issues yet with overheating the sensor.

i was on 440, near jersey. i should probably go on 287 since it is pretty dead at night.

i think i will try the innovate heat sink, thanks for the suggestion. on another note, do you think since my wideband has thrown that code a few times i should replace the sensor?
