Single turbo
I have not done any research yet but I was wondering if anyone could explain to me what was involved with going single? I assume right off the bat that a new exhaust manifold and turbo are required. BOV? Wastegate? What else? I am curious. Anmy recommendations? Pros / Cons?
Well as you said, you didn't do your research yet... I'd advise making use of the SEARCH function on here...
But in a nutshell... the things that MOST people do when going single is....
- Pick your turbo (this is a huge topic by itself)
- Figure out your fuel requirements
- Upgrade fuel system (pump and larger injectors)
- Upgrade cooling and ignition systems
- Figure out how you're going to do engine management (popular choices are the PowerFC or the Haltech depending on if you have an FD or an FC RX-7)
That's the VERY SHORT version.
The long parts list (and I'm probably forgetting something)
- turbocharger
- oil and water lines for the turbo
- manifold
- wastegate
- air filter for turbo
- better intercooler
- downpipe
- midpipe or high flow cat or resonated midpipe
- cat-back exhaust
- new secondary fuel rail
- larger secondary injectors
- possibly need larger primary injectors too
- fuel pressure regulator
- blow off valve
- larger fuel pump
- new fuel lines and fittings as needed to connect everything
- larger radiator to help cooling this beast (Fluidyne or Koyo usually)
- upgraded ignition system (HKS Twinpower or similar)
- Greddy elbow for the throttle body
- new hoses/pipes to connect the turbo/IC/throttle body
- delete factory air pump
- delete factory air control valve (due to larger secondary fuel rail)
- delete factory twin turbo controls (aka the rat's nest)
- change out spark plugs (usually four heat range 9)
- replace ignition wires with larger ones
- Install a programmable engine management system such as the Power FC or the Haltech
- Find someone to TUNE THIS BEYOTCH once you build it or learn to tune yourself.
- Rebuild the engine with a street port intake/exhaust to take maximum advantage of your newfound single turbo-ness. (somewhat optional, some people don'tdo this)
