after waiting on a number of items, in some cases a number of months, i believe i have close to all the hardparts and am in the assembly process.

motor is in, manifold is complete, ViPEC V88 ECU is in, wiring is close to being finished.

my IC is out and having an alu bung attached for my K IAT sensor which will log temps coming from the turbo before the IC. the Greddy elbow is having one AI fuel injector removed and the pipe between the IC and elbow is having the IAT port closed. i will be running a K thermocouple from the stock IAT UIM position. the 4 coils are mounted and primary plug wires have been made.

i will post a few pics of the engine compartment in a few days.

Where did you mount your coils?

coils are mounted on a 7 X 6 inch bracket w a 90 degree bend. the bracket locates against the lateral support for my stock mount (location) IC.

plug wires are short, coils are away from solid state elec components and the coils do not impede getting at the plugs.

mazda thoughtfully provided a nut for the front of the bracket and a couple of holes for the rear mount. i can reach in thru the larger second hole to get a nut on the bolt.

here's a couple of quick pics re the coils. please ignore a few of the ratty details which will shortly be straightened out. the coils/bracket needs to come out for a few details, locking nuts, wiring etc. i am happy w the location.

the ignition is an experiment on my part. i have previously ran 2 CDI boxes on my leads and am going completely inductive. if it works it will be nice as it is of course cheaper and more simple as to packaging.

RiceRacing, who is leading the way in a number of areas is absolutely convinced that CDI is necessary at 30 psi w W/M.

Lance/PanteraEFI thinks otherwise and makes a persuasive case. we are going to find out...

Inductive V CDI.

should inductive not cut it, it will be a simple deal to swap in CDI IGN coils and a couple of dual CDI boxes.

i just heard from R1 (friend/board member) and he is bringing over the pre turbo fuel injector assembly tomorrow... fits in my K&N airfilter. very trick, really nice.

Those coils will be better than whatever you had before.

i periodically receive request as to where to buy sheets of mica.

McMaster-Carr

item: 8779K51 10 X 12 X 1/8 about $60 and more than worth every penny.

Howard,

I haven't been able to keep up with this for a while, as I changed jobs and my new work blocks all the images so I can't see them, but looks like you have been making a little bit of progress, thanks for sharing!

This is a side note, but RE: datalog rates, I have been doing a bit of research on data logging setups for track-preping my car, and the AEM EMS (which I already use) can log at 250Hz.

More importantly, you can get one of these:
AQ-1 Data Logger - Wideband O2 UEGO, Water/Methanol, Stand Alone Engine Management, Piggyback F/IC, Tru Boost Controller, Gauges, Automotive Performance Electronics

8 channels, 1kHz max log rate, $400.

I bet some of the other companies make these too if you don't like AEM, (The other ones I know about are much slower) but for the type of testing you are doing, this would be invaluable. I need to do more research to see what the composite log rate is, as the 1kHz is likely only available on 1 channel at a time, but still it is more than I thought you could get for the $.

Quite a journey you've come on! I made a request about 30 pages back to change the title of the thread or SOMETHING to keep things to the point. 'Howards Build Thread'

just a brief update:

i am close to being finished w the wire-in. i am enjoying the work. it does take time but the ViPEC manual is very well executed and combined w the Mazda Wiring Shop Manual, a few emails to ViPEC which were answered the same day, searches thru the ECU Section, and help from fellow board member, the amazing, Chris Ludwig i am comfortable as to quality of execution to date.

there are lots of unique items.

four type K thermocouples (two EGTs, one intake air temp and one turbo output temp sensor)

two Bosch Mazda RX8 knock sensors

new type engine coolant and oil temperature sensors

new Link ViPEC four bar MAP sensor

four IGN-1A ignition coils (each w 5 wires that had to be soldered into their fittings)

four new custom Primary spark leads

two additional Bosch EV14 fuel injectors, one pre turbo, one in the elbow

two new EV14 1000 for my primaries

a new wide band featuring the uprated LSU 4.9 sensor and Bosch chip

three digital/logging pressure sensors, oil, fuel and AI system

new Full Function Eng primary and secondary fuel rails

new Full Function Eng Hall crank pickup system

new turbo manifold, new CHRA for the BW turbo, new engine

i am sure i am missing a few items but trail's end is in sight.

today i should finish the engine compartment and monday i will move to the cockpit... mainly connecting a number of relays... fuel pump, ignition coils & AI pump. then there's dealing w the dash items... tach speedo etc

it sure isn't over but it has been fun and will be exciting to experience initial blastoff.

there are a few issues i need to solve, mainly the fan hookup and dash items.

when finished i will post everything needed to do the wire in as i have been carefully making notes.

i can't wait to get to the point where i can install my transposed maps from my Power FC and turn the key.

I love your progress and I'm guessing you're eager to get it rolling again!

Does the new primaries mean you are running 1000x2 and 1680x2 in your rails?

just returned from my son's marriage in San Diego/La Jolla. (thurs/mon eve)

not an FD sighted

back at it today... relays, and the fan system and then we start buttoning things up.

"running 1000x2 and 1680x2 in your rails?" i am running 1000 prim and 2000 secondaries. AI injectors are 100 each. i have 2 but will only run one at a time. the 2 are so i can compare preturbo w post (elbow) turbo.

Congratulations. I saw a couple of FD's in Mira Mesa when I was there in early July.

How many buttons does this car have? Seriously though, still going to test the same turbos? Several new options since you first started on this journey.

We only have 2 months left for Howard to complete these tests.
Otherwise it will be too late to apply the knowledge.

Maybe that'll be the big shift for the 2012 date....everyone in the world will convert to Wankel motors and come to this bible-esque thread for enlightenment.

I think I'll have my 20b setting track records before a couple of days on the dyno happens here. And its currently sitting in pieces, I still have to button it up too lol.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and assume Howard is regretting switching ECU's and trying to reinvent the wheel over and over when it has already been perfected.

That is highly debatable.
