scared of standalones for my single turbo Fd

Pretty much like the topic says, im scared of the standalone units. As of now i really am unsure as to what one to get. i used to have a civic hatch with a GSR swap and i had a rechipped ECU with apexi VAFC and A/f gauge. i tuned it that way no problem and it ran great,, 28 MPG and 13.8s on motor.
My Fd has a Garret turbo, i dont know which one for sure becuase the guy i got my car from is a rich moron who doesnt know crap.On the exhuast housing it says .84 AR and on the inside of the intake housing its stamped in the casting "55" thats all i know about my turbo. no other markings elsewhere on the unit.
The car has a 3 in DP, no cat, 3in thermal exhaust. HKS wastegate, apparently the 14 PSI gate im guessing. (no boost gauge) stock ECU which cuts the engine out as soon as the car started making more than 12 PSI. The engine was rebuilt 4k ago with 3mm apex seals, new rotors, new rotor housings and all new gaskets and seals. Engine was built by petitt and has the street port done to it.
Other than that, everything else is stock. The engine was not harmed (knock on wood) i had it checked out at a shop and was diagnosed as a very strong running rebuilt engine. It was broken in properly as well, first 500 mi saw nothing above 4500RPM and he used the 2 cycle mix in the gas since rebirth.
There is a few people selling rechipped ECU's that are meant for the stock twins to handle pretty much every bolt on. (3in Dp and exhuast, FMIC, intake, fuel pump, ETC) i was thinking about getting one of those with a Apexi AFC with the greddy AF gauge w/ 4 wire O2, boost, boost controller and a EGT gauge. my thinking is that with this stuff i should be able to tune my car maybe up to 12-14 PSI with fuel pump 550 primaries and 850 2nds injectors, a FMIC, fluidyne radiator and BOV added.
--- will that work reliably? my goal is relibility more than a monster HP machine.
----Or---- what standalone system should i get? i would want one that i can tune will driving the car. thats how i did with my civic, i saw that it would go lean, i would imediatly get off the gas and bump up the fuel curve. It was simple and effective, plus once i was done tuning it, no additional tuning was needed anytime later even with different temps outside.
Ive seen people on this board saying that they are always tuning and playing with their programable computers and stuff. If i were to get a standalone, and i had some guru tune it, will it maintain the tune or will i have to play with it if the temperature drops or gains 20* outside.
The haltech setup i guess uses maps to bump up and down, like apexi's AFC and VAFC... i like that. opposed to plugging in wierd numbers that wont make sense to me untill after blowing up 4 engines.
----basically, im asking for anyones help to guide me into the right direction for the right fuel managment to run a fast and reliable FD. thanks to all that actually read my book i just wrote and help me out!

PowerFC is a good sytem. It is stand-alone but you can just plug it in to the stock wiring, which is nice. Rotaries are easy to blow up if you get detonation, so I would recommend against tuning it with anything less than a true wideband. The stock O2 sensor and any other non-widebands won't be accurate enough to tune the car safely.

Widebands aren't very expensive these days. Here's one that can be had for under $450 including the sensor: http://www.techedge.com/. Hook it up to a Datalogit with your PowerFC and you'll have a great system for tuning.

Here's a link to a thread in the PowerFC forum about my recent install of this combo:

I'd suggest getting a boost gauge before doing anything else

just out of curiosity,, would the reprogrammed ECU and apexi AFC be able to run the engine properly at 12PSI or for some awkward reason is wont meet the demands of the engine? of course with the AFC hack setup it would have the WB02,EGT, and all other gauges and aftermarket parts to tune it properly. ANyone have any advice/experience towards that? thanks.
