Which Rotor Popped An Apex Seal Poll
#7
The most interresting part of the rx7 is that even though they arent the "best" cars in reliability, there are many people that wants to have one. I think it has something to do with love.......

OOPS!! I voted wrong, I should have picked Sequential Rear instead of single rear. Sorry. Please correct this.
One thing I noticed with mine is that the intakes were black and the rear intake was worse than the front. I tried the ATF treatment hoping the apex seal was just stuck, but it wasn't. When I finally removed the engine, there was a large pile of ATF and Carbon in the exhaust manifold (from my engine). I also noticed that the apex seal looked different than the others. I believe that the spring popped out beside the apex seal. When I look at that seal, it appears to be a small, sharp apex instead of the rounded 2mm apex of the other ones.
One thing that I noticed is that there is (I believe) the egr pipes coming back into the intake at the rear and middle areas, but not on the front intake. The front intake was the cleanest and the front rotor did not appear to have much carbon buildup. But the rear rotor was bad. The engine definitely was running rich also.

Hey, I was just thinking, you need to compare apples to apples and not oranges. I hope you will give some weighted factors. Most people probably have already blown the engine with stock turbos on, then upon rebuild, decided to go single while they were torn down. You will most likely have more Sequential failures just due to the fact that there are more sequentials versus singe turbos.

Chuck...I can add only 2 more additional fields...probably not enough...
Dont know how to get rid of the one vote deal...Hopefully not too many of us have more then one

okay...okay...i got a 93 R1....and about a month ago...i was "running" it....on interstate 95. Well as i get off the highway and pull up to the first light...i see smoke..coming out my exhaust. White smoke...then i pull into the first gas station i see and that damn "hold" light starts flashing. Then this red light starts flashing. The rpms are going from 1 grand to 0 constantly. I drove it home and it hasnt started up since. My friend and I looked at it and seen oil coming out the exhaust manifold. Then we too the stock air box apart saw oil all in the air intake system. Why would it do this???

I blew the rear apex seals while trying to tune. I'm running seq and it was around 12-13psi of boost. I was pulling fuel out and ran it lean.
On a side note I only had about 38K-40K miles and I always used premix from Pettit and the inside of my motor looked like a mirror, it was beautiful inside except the big groove in the housing from the busted seal.
Later,
STEPHEN

Bah.. need to vote more than 1 time..
sequental turbo 1 front and 1 rear
single turbo 2 fronts
and 1 blown engine where the apex seals were fine, cracked the intermediate housing...
Note: I like to experiment with just how much boost the crappy gas they sell on the Military base can take...

Yellow Dragon is no more
I thought everyone remembered when I broke my e-shaft last October. Snapped right behind the rear lobe on the e-shaft. It took the rear bearing with it as well -- real nice smell to it.

I moved it here because it has a 5 day voting limit on it, and it had low responce when over there. Since moved here it has better responce.
Since I have not blown an engine and thus have not voted, the first person who needs multiple votes and contacts me, I will add there second vote!!!!
