rebuilt t78 and smoking?

Got the t78 rebuild by majestic not even 2k miles ago, and when i drive even without getting on it i have a trail of smoke out the tail pipe. When i do get on it a little i does smoke and if i lift the hood i can see smoke comming from under the turbo, looks to be right where the clamp is on the hot side. Im thinking they put the oil seal in wrong or something? The engine is also brand new, but i checked all of the oil hoses and check valves which looked fine. I think its the turbo only because i can see it burning oil, either that or the oil return line is barely spitting oil and burning off on the turbo, but the clamp felt tight, ANY ideas?

Eric, that oil line came in the kit with the turbo. It has restrictor in the line.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM with my twin turbos. They took the same ones that were blown and put them back on while rebuilding the engine. Im thinking its something to do with the compressor! And it had a little of shaft play. Haved you checked the pipes to see if theres any big jellow-like globs of oil (also the intercooler pipes). Other than that i would just go ahead and do a turbo rebuild.

since the return line is a gravity drain, that looks like your problem. you want that line as vertical as possible. What size is the line?

as you suspected...the return is backing up and pushing oil passed the turbine oil seal.

i took the check valve off and blew through it. Obvesouly one side came through fine and the other didnt. I put the tip in some water and blew and there was a little air comming out, but i think thats normal, so the only conclusion i can think of is that Majestic rebuild the turbo wrong.....DAMNIT!

what check valve are you talking about? if your drain line is horizontal that is a problem.

I meant to say horizontal after comming off the turbo, the check valve that i looked at is off of the oil filler cap to the left(if you are looking at the engine). The oil return line comes off the bottom of the turbo which is vertical, but then turns right(horizontal) into the engine.

Im sure there are lots of other places...But majestic came highly recommended, which is why i sent it there. The turbo now is the least of my worries.... after i just got all my work done a lady rear ended me at 35mph and pushed me into a ford explorer. She hit the exhaust and the turbo was cocked against the passenger wheel well... The car started smoking really badly. I got it towed to a body shop and when we pull the front mount off i had about 2.5 quarts of oil in my intercooler and none in the engine... So somehow my brand new motor went with the turbo in the accident So sad how god hates me.

The good part is that the insurance company is going to cover every penny since i just got everything redone a little over a month ago. The lady at progressive also said that if they decide to total it, i would probably get from 23-25 for the car since thats what an Rx7 goes for with my mods.
