questions (about bigger turbo setups)

still learning the fd world (begin reading and learning for a few years now)
have a honda , and if i were to boost it, i could go 7-9psi with good tuning

but if i wanted to boost it the right way(best/safer way), i would have the motor built (sleeved, and low comp. pistons) and run 7-30psi with good tuning ..

so my question is what can the stock fd motors handle ?
what needs to be done if anything to run a bigger turbo/turbos?
and if you were to do things the right way(best/safer way), how would you build the motor?
already knowing.... need bigger injectors, good tuning ...
also im sure it depends on the hp goal....lets say 450-500...

mainly wondering about street ports, etc..., if there needed for more hp or there just better for hp...

thanks

hey i see that you have a silver FD in ohio. i live in ohio and have a silver FD also. As for your question there are many ways that you can go to get 450-500hp on an FD and there are a lot of things to consider but it is pretty safe to assume that you will need at least 10k to go from stock to a basic single turbo setup. if you are ever in the lima area you can stop by and check out my single turbo fd.

ive got a little extra time on my hands i guess so here is just a basic list of what you will need to go single turbo and get in the 400+hp range

single turbo kit
bigger injectors
upgraded intercooler
Standalone
clutch
fuel pump

and there are many more things that you can and should do such as water/meth injection, ignition amp, boost controller, street port, and much more. once you start modding the list never ends. if you have any other questions pm me and ill try to help you out if I can.

unlike your honda, or any well engineered modern piston engine, the rotary is not in need of alot of new internals, like sleeves, lower comp pistons etc.

with the magic of turbocharging you can even get by w stock ports... they will not be as efficient and ultimately will limit power v a modded port.

generally there are stages of power w the rotary. lots of people make in the high 300s w modest upgrades, then there's the 400-450ish range which generally features midrange turbos and mods. it takes approx 60 lbs/minute of air and v good tuning to make 450. from 450 up it gets more demanding from every aspect. 500 hp takes 66 lbs/minute of air, clutches get real expensive etc.

if you do whatever you decide right you will not regret running a rotary.

good luck

Here is my break down on prices as I am going single currently but had most everything upgraded already so I only really needed a single kit. I think 10k is a bit much for going single though, I would say that's close to correct for someone with a stock car and will be having someone else do all the work. I do think it can be done much cheaper though. I have been doing my own tuning, installation and fabing of parts since I have owned my car. A person may or may not be able to do those parts though. There are ways to do stuff right but cheaper and you can always look in the parts forum for used deals.

single turbo kit (DIY or Kit) 1200-5000
exhaust 300-500
bigger injectors (850, 1300)'s 250
upgraded intercooler and BOV 200-800
Standalone (PFC, Datalogit, WBO2) 1200
clutch 400
fuel pump (Walbro) 100
ignition amp (MSD 6A, HKS) 200-400
tuning 200-400

There are other things that should be upgraded already though. I guess I would think that if your contemplating going single you should have already upgraded most of the above and below though first. To give a fair estimate I guess we would need to know what has been done to the car already.

radiator
ast
diff brace
tires

those are the answers i was looking for...thanks...
so basiclly this motors can hang the power, i can run a stock port , but to get the most out of my system and still be streetable i should go with a street port...

my car (bought it about 2-3 months ago) has 85,000 on the motor (still stock motor) when the time comes to get a new motor i was thinking street port...

ive got my gauges , just finished my v-mount install last week (rotary extreme)
the ast ive been thinking about eliminating ..and the air pump is going to go bye bye...
exhaust would be next (either winter or this spring) along with pfc ...
im looking around the 400 or more hp range...
i didnt want to buy the exhaust yet because i didnt know if (like a dual tip racing beat) would still be ok to run with a single setup...or the bnr setup...

thanks alot....
