Question: Gapping spark plugs - why so small?

It's seemed like many have been yielding good results with cooler, gappable plugs so I'm following along. I bought a set of BR10EIXs and at the same time am installing a MSD 6a on the leading. My question is about the gapping of plugs.

Recommendations that I have seen look like:

B*EGV (gold-paladium electrode) at .020" - .022"

BR*EIX (iridium electrode) at .022" - .023"

Stock BURs have a fixed gap of .040"

The EIXs that I recieved came gapped to .030" and .023" just seems like such a tiny gap to run. Why so small, particularly if stock plugs run around .040? The small iridium tip should take less energy to spark so shouldn't a larger gap be possible?

I'm curious to know if anyone's tried a larger gap than .023" on one of these plugs and what your experience was. Also, what ignition amp were you running?

Thanks.

I ran B9EGVs at .020-.025" and they did great, even at idle.

I just changed over to BR9IEX and gapped them the same as above. The ran good but idled badly. Then I regapped them to .030" and now they run good at all speeds and up to 15PSI boost which is my max.
