Putting a turbo on a 12A

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has ever put a turbo on a 12a rotory engine? I have got a 1985 rx 7 GL that was going to be a pro 7 race car, but now I want to turn in it into "gulp" dare I say a "ricer". I have been doing some looking around and nice Gen 1 RX7's are hard to find. Anyway, Ive never worked on the rotory and wasnt sure if rebuilding my 12a for a turbo is better than just getting a turbo 13b.

just use a stock s5 turbo with a 60 compressor upgrade.
that should put you in the 200whp range eaisly.

yeah that what Im finding out. But I would like to be in the high 300's or low 400's I have also aquired 2 twenty pound bottles of NO2. So I guess that would get me there, but I would like to be there with just the engine, and use the boost for the occasional porsche.

well at least you are on the right track with the 2 20lb bottles of NO2 if you are going for the ricer thing. if you were in the high 300 to low 400hp range you shouldnt have problems with porsches, especially because most porsches you see are boxsters driven by middle aged women. keep in mind you are talking about a car that wieghs less than 2500lbs with 400hp. sounds to me like you have a long, hard, expensive road ahead of you. do some research, and robert @ rotaryshack can answer allot of your questions and sell you parts needed.

Yeah, I decided to go the ricer route with this one. I am allready building a Pro Seven racer with my Pops. I bought mine to do the same, but Ive had a change of heart. I would rather "pit" for him and really do some neat custom work on mine.

I'm hoping for 200~225 to the wheels @ 10 psi. a street port in the future should put me near 275.

Your looking for more your going to need to find lower compression rotors from a 12at engine from japan. That way you can run higher boost.

Right now, I'm working out the bugs and trying to find a turbo prepped float for the carb.

What the hell is this NO2 talk? I didnt know running Nitrous Dioxide was a common thing with Rotaries.

If you are going to be referring to nitrous oxide, please use the correct term, N2O.

That is all.

whether you go 12A turbo or 13B turbo is not much of an issue because you can top 300 HP with either engine. the issue is what type of setup you are going to use in your attempt to attain your power goals.

getting that kind of power is going to take money either way. your turbo choice will be key, and your supporting mods will be critical.

it would be better to give us an idea of what your plans are in terms of proposed setup. carbie vs. EFI, engine management, etc.

just my 2 cents

exactly, the 12a in it's stock block form has made over 275rwhp in turbo setups. this is reliably, but it can make more but then you are looking to cause serious damage. that's when you tear it open and build it up for boost. like diabolical said, the turbo itself is KEY!!! i went with a modified s4 turbo. will hold 15psi steadily and won't lag too bad but still has good top end. i may only make 225-250 hp but that is enough for my street fb as of now. 300 - 400 hp is attainable but you will need at the least a very large street port and a good size turbo. stay away from the N2O. you really wont need it. good luck!

Well, as far at the set up goes I think I may try something different. I talked to a neighbor of mine that works for a reputable tuning shop (Dyno-Comp) and he said that I should go with the 20B and install a turbo on it. What do you guys think?

250whp is good for a 11-12 second car. 400hp in a street driven first gen turbo is pointless. your 13 or 14 inch wheels will never be able to get traction.

They do sell awfully wide 13/14 inch wheels. this is just an ugly example but its a 13x10j wheel. So much for the traction argument.

WOW, thats a pretty wide tire!!! However, I dont think that Im going to run the 13 inch wheels. I came across a body-kit that allows up to 16 inch rims. I was thinking about running 15x9 rims. That way I can lower the car a little bit. Also I was going to add some extra weight to the rear, and or LSD.
