Very nice setup Charlie. Clean well placed components sharing the common cool air.

I started with aluminum then fabed a fiberglass version. Glass over foam posterboard for insulation for the box.

For the cover I used a small trash can as a form for the fiberglass.

That is great. Did you notice any difference in intake temps now that you are not sucking in engine heat?

Even with my small PFS intercooler I usually only run about 6ºC above ambient. (26ºC day, 32ºC on the PFC commander).

If everything is perfect I can maintain only 3ºC above ambient till a heatsoak event.

There is no increase in temp when boosting because of 50/50 water/meth injection.

It will still take a few miles to cool down after a heat soaking shutdown, say from 60 ºC.

I have an extra spray switch that will drop the temps faster if needed.

my K&N 7" long filter split in the rubber part, behind the clamp. I don't think it could take the torquing of the engine. I didn't like the design of it anyway, it had a little lip inside that kept me from being able to slide the whole rubber part on to the turbo.

I've got the 4 inch chode filter back on. I may switch to a cheapie Spectre from Pep Boys.

My FD made almost 500 rwhp on the dyno, and removing the shorty filter didn't seem to make any difference. There was a huge fan (like 4 feet square) that pushed more air as the car spun the rollers faster.

I don't think the chode is holding me back. But I'm tired of people telling me I have a chode on my turbo

Whatcha guys think? Just swapped for a bigger filter today... Monster V-Mount has been pushed all the way over and it was still a tight turn around the end tank , luckily Rene over at RMS fabbed me a perfect "S" pipe. I think next I'll build a nice carbon fiber box around the filter...

This is why I just replaced my intake with a screen. Since it never gets driven in the rain or off roading I am not really worried about it haha. I had over 15k on my old set up with just a screen.

However for you guys trying to figure out a fix for the rubber lip on the K&N melting. Do this.

Pick up some DEI Cool Tape, Wrap around turbo inlet inside out, trim to fit and put the filter on tight. We did this on a friends car that was having continuous issues with the rubber melting and he never has had the problem since.

Here is the DEI Cooltape: http://www.designengineering.com/cat...ials/cool-tape

What are you using for a screen?

Wire mesh screen from Home Depot (non-silicone coated)

4" Rubber coupler

T-bolt clamp or Hose Clamp

Cut a 6" circumference circle of screen and place over turbo to form it to shape.

Put over coupler and trim to fit over inlet lip so the screen is between the turbo inlet and coupler (this prevents screen from slipping out)

Tighten down clamp.

For guys that really don't have room, this is a better alternative than a mesh screen or (ahem) panty hose

It will be a tight squeeze for a 4 inch inlet, but I'll bet it could be made to fit.

I just picked up the RC-3600 K&N filter to replace my old shorty. This one is 5 inches long, so 43% longer. I had made a few minor changes to the engine bay to free up incremental room, so it fit (barely) with no problems

Air Filter Bottom Measurement
5.375 in. diameter
Air Filter Style
Conical
Air Filter Top Measurement
4.500 in. diameter
Filter Color
Red
Filter Material
Cotton gauze
Inlet Flange Inside Diameter (in)
4.000 in.
Length (in)
5.000 in.
Notes
With chrome end cap.

A shot of the new filter installed, it just makes it.... about 40% more surface area

Sorry to dig this thread up from its proverbial grave, but would the Rx-4130 filter drastically affect the turbo's ability to breath on a 400whp rx7?

Thanks much.

Mine didn't.... Did a dyno pull with and without, it made no difference. My filter doesn't even have the open top either.

Part# RC-4480

386whp & 331ft

I wanted to add a little more information. After calling K&N today, the filter I use and the x-stream top that Rich posted have the same flow rating. I will be turning up the boost soon so we shall see how the little guy does. Honestly, if I lose 15whp, I don't mind. It's the best filter I could find for my setup.

RX-4130-1
256cfm at 1.5" of H2O

RC-4480
255cfm at 1.5" of H2O

For the record, the screen will block flow WAY more than even a small filter because you're killing your surface area.

After being completely unable to swallow using a screen on my newly built engine, I called K&N today and they are custom making me a filter.

I managed to pull a 375cfm x 1.5 H2O filter from the molds they currently have. As a comparison, GoodFella's filter from his original post flows 340cfm x 1.5 H20.

Quite a gain from my current configuration. Matt, the tech support guy was very "on point" with his flow ratings, sizes and their ability to accomodate my setup.

I urge others with a unique need to give them a call. I will take pics and report back when it arrives in a few weeks.

Did you received it? Any pics? How much something custom like that would cost? Also where can you get those flow numbers?

It took K&N's custom build shop about 1.5 weeks to build my filter and ship it to my door. It cost $130 to make. I will post pics soon. Just give them a call for your needs. They are on point.

For flow calculation, K&N rep told me what each one was, but they were essentially using these formulas.

CFM Formulas for Filters

Round: Diameter x Height x 6 x 3.14
Flat Panel: Length x Width x 6
Universal Round Taper: (Base + Top) / 2 = A
Take A x Length x 6 x 3.14
Universal Round Straight: Diameter x Length x 6 x 3.14
