Need more power (GT35R)

whats up everybody, im kinda new to this board. I need the FD experts to chime in. So, i bought a 93 CYM R1. The car came with IRP stage II street ported motor, A spec GT35R/T4 turbo kit, A450R fueling kit (fuel rail with 2 1680cc secondaries), 3" or 3.5" exhaust with racing beat muffler. The car dynoed (dynojet) at 400RWHP at 18psi. What i want to know, is this pretty conservative number? im shooting for 450-480rwhp, what else do i need besides tuning? any good tuners for the Apexi power FC in southern Cali? any input will be appreciated. thanks

Swap out the turbo or turn up the boost.

i mean if you cant figure that tiny bit out on your own, maybe you should take a step back for a second.

Water/alky injection would be a good investment before turning the boost up any more. You should be able to reach your power goals with that turbo but you will need to run probably 22-24psi. Search the single turbo forum for others with that turbo, as well as the powerFC forum for tuners in your area. Thats a fairly common turbo on these cars and theres tons of info already out there.

just calm down man, i said im new to this. I meant why would i want to swap turbo if this turbo is capable of 500+ whp. I was researching this as this GT35r doesnt put out much power after 22+psi. Im at 400whp at 18psi. I figured cranking up the boost 3-5 psi aint gonna make me another 50-80whp. Do you think my tuning is somewhat too conservative?

My shop built that car, it's featured on our website.

Tam/FDZero wanted a fairly tame, streetable, quiet car. Look into a different catback, get an Aquamist water injection system installed, and get it re-tuned. Boom, instant 75-100 more rwhp. I ported and built that engine myself, and it's one of the best we've turned out.

Also, a dyno number is just that, a number. You're telling me you've ripped on the car through all four lower gears and it feels slow to you?

Apex'i makes the GT Spec exhaust. Its 3.75", so not quite 4" but damn close.

Yes.

A GT35 on an Rx-7 is not like a GT35 on say an Evo. First of all, a 4G63 or 4B11T like very high boost levels--30+ pounds isn't as big of a deal, and that's what those engines are running to make so much power. Second, an I6 (2JZ etc) and I4 (4G63, B18, etc) don't have the backpressure issues that rotary engines do.

400whp on an Rx-7 is like 500-600whp on a lot of other cars due to weight and gearing.

yes that catback is restrictive at boost levels above a bar. i made 425 rwhp at 17 psi with the same set up and a good flowing 3 inch exhaust. the motor was junk as well. the tune was good running 10.8 to 11.0 afrs

This is a very valid point. I kept avoiding this fact as I was tuning my car and expecting more HP out of it but it is true. I have seen Evos run 40psi on my turbo to get 700-800whp. That is just a lot of boost.

If you look at an EVO or STI running 22-24psi (more of a street psi setup) they are in the high 400s low 500s. Example, two of my friends have STIs with 35r setups one made 475whp at 22psi fully built long block and the other made 480whp at 24psi stock long block. My other buddy's EVO dynoed 515whp 28 psi pump/meth cammed stock motor.
