Need Moderate Performance Turbo

I'm looking to replace a worn out turbo on a '92 TII engine with something with a little more poop. Engine is going into a lightweight, non-RX-7, so I am probably going to have to build an exhaust manifold to clear the frame. I don't need/want anything more than 300-325 rwhp in the car.

The vehicle will be used on the street and at the autocross. I'm looking for quick spool at relatively low rpm. Don't want to spend a ton of money on the turbo, either. Engine will be near-stock internally, with mild intake and exhaust porting.

What turbo would the experts suggest I get?

Thanks, but I have searched. Spent the last two days going through every post here. The problem is 99% of the information is geared toward big horsepower applications. For instance, if I want 400hp, I know a GT35 is probably my best bet. For 500hp and above, the GT40 is the cat's meow. Etcetera.

The problem is I only need 300 wheel horsepower and fast spooling. The closest answer I can find for my application on the forums is a T04, but the range of T04 options is a bit overwhelming, and nobody seems to be very clear on the answers. Usually, in fact, some smart *** ends up saying "search the forums; the answer is there." Well, I have, and it ain't obvious where the answer is.

Okay, that little rant finished, there's a local guy selling a new "T04" for cheap. Here's what he says in his ad:

"Brand NEW in box, Garret t-04 Turbochargers. Just taken out of the box for inspection and photos, then put back in the protective bag. It is just as I received it, nothing has been altered or changed. Compressor side is 1.10A/R and the turbine side is .48A/R split scroll. Built-in waste-gate."

What do you guys think about these specs? The turbine AR seems small, but is it?

Any other comments or ideas (besides "search"?)

I think he has the AR's backwards. But I think a GT3076r with a 1.06 t3 housing would spool well and support your hp goals. Also it uses gt35r turbine housings so you could swap to the a-spec t4 housing for a little more top end but spool would be affected.

A boosted rotary and cheap don't go together. Well they do, but not for long.

I'm not a expert on s5 turbo stuff, but aren't there a few people out there running 300+rwhp on the stock turbo? Otherwise, I say Rx-6 or a T04E. Last I checked Rx-6s are not cheap. (Do they even sell them separately anymore?) CJ
