Need ideas for air filter!

I'm trying to figure out what to do about an airfilter for my setup...! Its a 4" inlet. The problem I've run into is the filter I have won't fit inbetween the radiator fan and the mount neck. Any Ideas?
Thanks!
Ryker

Go and buy a generic filter with a rubber backing. Cut it out to the size of the inlet and you're done.

I.E. take the filter and cut the band that usually sticks out off then trim the inside of the hole untill it slides over it?
thanks,

Yep, cut it small enough so that it's nice and snug on the turbo inlet.

Zip tie some screen over it.

That's more restrictive that a K&N type filter.

or buy some 4" silicone that has a 45 or 90 degree bend and attach a filter to it...

Maybe if you were using some 2 foot long 12" dia. K&N filter sticking out of the hood. So can you tell me why I have to retune when I run a K&N, but I don't when I put screen?

BAD PLAN!!!! DO NOT DO THIS!!!

Screening will inevitibly pucker inwards while slipping through the zip tie and before you know it your compressor wheel has eaten the screen and if you are exceptionally lucky, only screwed up the wheel. . . . more than likely however you will suck the screen into the housing putting sheer forces on both the shaft & the bearing --------- ultimately siezing the CHRA. ====> Turbo Rebuild!

If you are extremely unlucky, pieces of the screening will make their way through the IC, TB and intake and you can guess what can happen from there.====> Engine rebuild.

BAD PLAN!!!!

This is what Ralf Friend uses, he runs around 600HP, seems to work for him.I think it is a HKS (not sure) http://66.216.67.51/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=214&1=319&2=-1

I personally don't think that is sufficient to really filter the stuff I want out of the air before entering a very expensive engine. I am running a monster 6"x14" KN cone filter, which has roughly 260 in^2 almost 2 square ft of area before the pleats which easily doubles or triples the actual outside dimensional surface area.

If I were you I would take twinturborx7petes advice and measure out a conservative dimensional space you have to work with and find a K&N that fits your setup.

While it would be very nice to avoid a 90 degree bend in your intake, it kind of seems necessary from your pictures if you are concerned with getting a larger filter.

I would suggest getting some 4 inch aluminum tubing and 90 deg coupler and T bolt clamp that thing in there. All can be found at ATP for descent pricing, but with a little searching found much cheaper.

good luck

You can get cheap Santoprene hose from http://www.mcmaster.com/ to relocate the filter. I've used this stuff on the stock turbos and on my single and it works great. The stuff I used on the stock turbos was in great condition after two years under my hood.

Look at part #53145K67.

Actually we've found that putting something like a 90 degress elbow on the turbo increase hp significantly. This is because it reduces turbulance and lets the turbo suck more air. K&N has filters that will work. Greddy also makes an airinx filter with a 4" inlet.

Blitz has an SUS stainless filter that is only 3 or 4" deep. Looks kinda like a mushroom filter to me. Might want to check that out.

I actully run the stainless screen from a collander or a tea strainer. I have been using this for the better part of the last 5 yrs with no problems. Yes, if you use some cheap *** flimsy screen you might suck it in. I myself do not live in an area where there are gravel roads or alot of debri on the road. If I did, I would probably run a filter.

IGY, have you tried an air filter to see if it performs better? As others have mentioned, screens are actually deceptively restrictive. Even coarse screening has a failrly high percentage of blockage.

The coarse screen that Pegasus sells for putting in radiator openings, etc. have blockages ranging from 34-44%:
