is my turbo trashed?
the other day i went for a drive in my s5 TII. it seemed to run great but when i returned home i popped the hood and i was shocked to see oil all around the BOV area, so i determind that the BOV is spraying ALOT of oil out of it. What could cause this? i dont know a whole lot about turbos but i know they require a certin amount of oil pressure and to much can cause problems but ive been driving it for a while and havent had this issue. i also know that they have oil seals would a blown seal cause this problem? the turbo is a HKS T04R. thanks

i did take the filter off and there is some oil but not as much as what the BOV is spitting out. and i checked for shaft play there is some side to side play but i dont know enough about turbos to know how much is acceptable. how do i know if its toast?

the turbo was bought used from a buddy of mine so im not sure how many miles are on it. i know i put about 3-4k on it. for a while its been spraying a light layer of oil on my engine around the BOV but now its spraying alot of oil its pretty much dripping off the engine and underside of the hood

Are you 100% sure it's coming from that area? Is your BOV mounted before or after the intercooler? Is there oil anywhere else on the engine in random spots?
Before I got a catch can, oil used to spray straight out of the filler tube breather and onto my e-fan under high boost, and then when I would pop the hood, random spots in my engine bay would be coated with oil. Really confused me until I realized what was going on. Just a thought, and if the oil is never anywhere else, it's probably not the same situation.. but before you call your turbo bad and spend your money, you might check around for other possible culprits.

wow thats a good call.. the BOV is mounted after the intercooler so now that i think about it how could all that oil go thru the intercooler? wouldn't it get trapped? and also the small tube that comes out at the top of the oil fill tube is just open no hose or plug on it. it may be coming from there. thanks alot for the suggestions

^ you can run both lines from the catch can to both the nipples on the oil fill neck and of course vent the catch can. Or you can run one line to the oil fill neck and the other to the intake/inlet tube before the turbo. Its been debated numerous times on the forum. I've been running both lines to the filler neck with vented catch can with no problems on my singled ported motor.

^ no problem at all that the is purpose of the forum. Learn as you go. Its your choice, you can put a small breather filter on or run another line to the intake side of the turbo system. I've done both and noticed no difference. Some prefer to run the extra line to match the stock configuration. If you go with the breather filter option, you can find one at Auto Zone. I bought a nice stainless one there for about ten bucks.
