My SS Autochrome mani. CRACKED! - PICS

Wow...less than 5k miles...what a piece of crap... I would stay away from these... I'm going to see if SS will give me another until I can buy 1revvin's manifold.

it has nothing to do with ss autochrome, most stainelss manifolds will crack, if you look up properties for SS you will see why its not the best thign to make manifolds out of. its got a high coeefficient of thermal expansion and its not very elastic. so when it gets hot its easier to crack. but either way that sucks

yea, even greddy manifold crack just like that, and you would think those are higher quality. it depends a lot on how much you abuse your car and how the manifold is bougth up to the heat and stress and how its cooled down.

Was this one of the "newer" style SS mani's?

I bet if this was 321 and welded properly, it wouldn't have cracked.

Look at where is cracked...
It started at the weld seam, but then ended up cracking through the homogeneous pipe where there was no weld.
This implies poor or improper stainless steel.

This is the FC manifold. Those appear to be two half stamped pieces welded together, then the flanges and WG tube welded on as well. The only tubing used on those mani's are the WG tube. POS

I'm not complaining, i understand i get what i pay for. I'm just posting this so ppl know that their stuff is garbage. They do use low quality STAMPED pieces, and the only tubing is for the WG, which is in a really shitty place. All of the welds are low quality. It sad that it only lasted 5k miles.....

I dunno about you guys, but the welds on my SS Autoc manifold look like perfectly stacked coins. Isnt that supposed to be what good welds look like?

I have had a couple of cars in here that use those and have around 12k miles on them. No signs of cracking. Was yours an older version? Just have a shop go thru and reweld it.

Guys, this is the FC VERSION NOT the FD. Totally diferent manifolds in every aspect. The FC mani's aren't tubular. They are two halfs of stainless that are stamped into shape (copy of the HKS cast) then welded together and flanges and WG tube welded on.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FC3S-...spagenameZWDVW

And even though the "newer" SSAutoCrap" FD manifolds use heavier wall tubing and flanges, there design SUCKS BALLZ most notable the T4 flange which does not merge AT ALL to the proper inlet shape and no runners being equal length. But, for the price people love them (even though the cast manifolds probly flow better and are bullet proof when compared to the SSAuto).

Just my $0.02, but who the hell am I to give an opinion?

I dont know?? I dont really care what people say... For the price of a handmade unit, I could buy a shitload of the ssautochrome. However mine hasnt failed so far and to me that manifold is worth every penny..

And it cracked again in a different spot, and I was super easy on the car this time around. Very light boosting here and there, and adequate warmup and cool down times. I took that POS off and I've purchased a manifold from 1Revvin7...

they just copied it from hks and greedy. do they suck ***** too? every place i've seen that sells the hks tubular manifold give a warning about it being subject to cracking.

He is reffering to the design, not the material; you know as not having equal lenght runners...

Sure, I'll say it.
Both the HKS and GReddy (at least spell it right) designs SUCK.
Wastegate ports are not placed efficiently, and the designs are made more to just fit the compact engine bay of the FC / FD.

When you need to build things right, make one yourself!

That's what happens with SS stuff, they don't hold as well. The welds are very good, but they need to use better metal for better results, rather than looks. All I can say is, they need to improve on getting stronger SS.

Turbo timers are a waste of money. It's always better to just drive the car around at light throttle a mile or so before shut-down. At least this way you still have valuable air flow through your radiator and oil coolers. Idling just heats **** up more because there's no air flow.
