You'll have to watch the STi after the tuners get a hold of it. That is going to be one scary package after it's been worked on. But I'll still put money on any well tuned FD.

Gee, TD06 (20G, 25G) is considered fricken huge on a WRX, and it's borderline unspoolable on street application.
We consider a TD06 a "medium" sized turbo for a 13B, capable of 400hp to the wheels.

If you are comparing equally modified cars, ie: similar HP/TQ levels and curves, similar suspension, etc then I agree of course.
But almost any FD? come on...
I guess it depends on what you call a "well tuned" STI or Evo. Some would say "well tuned" means basic good smart mods, others would think it means the best all out package.

To me, well-tuned is well-tuned. I think the STI and EVO could do better slicin' 'n dicin' through street traffic and on a road course. The sun doesn't rise and set on drag racing. The STI, EVO, and FD aren't drag racin' cars although the FD is pretty good at it.
I've observed a WRX tear up Corvettes, Mustangs, RX7, etc. on the road course at No Problem Raceway Park. Of course this WRX is a track-prepped street car. It puts on an impresive show.
Check my gallery pics; see if I'm tuned or not.

mass, suspension design (decade old or not), balance, and general dynamics far FAR outstrip those 5 seater GT/rally racing cars' ability around a track.
lemme ask you this, bud, how many Imprezas and Lancers do you see in serious professional racing (on tarmac)?? i can't think of any... not a single prestigious race win, or even a "participation" mark for either of those cars.
on a low grip surface (in the rain, or dirt/gravel road) the AWD would give nearly double the acceleration, so it would be a done deal against the 7, but on a track??? you've gotta be kidding me. there is no contest.

The debate gets interesting
....I don't feel belittled. I think the STI and EVO will be developed and will do well. What race series allows them to compete on a level field?
Watched any SPEED World Challenge GT racin' last year or this? How's 'bout those RS6 QUATTRO's? On pavement. Not a good talking-point.
How about AWD Porsche Carrera 4's and Turbo's? I don't know if they're competing in any mainstream, "bigger" series, but they will hurt the FD on the street in street-prepared trim and on pavement. Again, I'm not talking drag racing because certain Civics can and will beat certain traditionally "unbeatable" cars. Current S4's can be made to hurt an FD on pavement. FD's can be made to hurt an S4.
While the sun doesn't rise and set on the FD, I think it is still one of the greatest cars of all time, certainly ahead of its time and at the head of its target marketing niche.
Doing street-prepared battle is always going to be first a battle of economics, then everything else. I think the STI and EVO are excellent platforms from which to start the war on tarmac. I've already seen it happen. What, am I gonna believe my eyes or am I gonna believe you?
I've already chosen my FD weapon and I'm dedicated to it with no forseeable plans to abandon it. Besides, I like it.

With equal drivers and setups, the FD would still have an edge due to balance and mass. However, an STi or an Evo can and do challenge the FD on the track. And for whoever it was that mentioned STi wasn't in any tarmac racing, check out the 300hp JGTC class. The STi runs there and does VERY well. Just wanted to throw that in there.

P.S. I wasn't trying to turn this into a flame war. Because let's be honest... On a track, you can't compare the FD and the STi. It's like apples and oranges.

How does one go about equalizing setups betwixt the STI and FD? Or a Mustang, Corvette, 3000GT VR4, and an FD?
On the other front, implying AWD is inferior to RWD across the board is flawed.
Manufacturers and the after-market offer mind-boggling arrays of neat stuff and because of that, the antiquated notions defining performance continue to perish at 8 mpg. It's already happening. The single turbo FD already bankrupted the old school. Get ready for more bankruptcies.

I'm not arguing that point. I'm just saying that they are totally different beasts. I have seen first hand what these AWD setups are capable of and it's SCARY!! I'm just saying that they are far too different to compare like people have been doing on here lately.

I see what you mean now. My two really good friends have one of each. One Evo VIII and one '02 WRX. The Evo is prepped for drag while the WRX is prepped for tarmac. Both of them do an INCREDIBLE job. But they feel completely different than the tarmac and drag prepped FD's I have been in. Not better or worse, just different. I have tons of respect for both platforms. I just personally prefer FR's over AWD's.
