LS1 Coil Limitations?
LS1 Coil Limitations?
I have seeing quite a few LS1 coil threads lately and was wondering how far these coils have been pushed on a rotary. They would work for a rather neat and compact install for my sequential ignition setup and was considering them for use. I plan on running E85 out of a T04R at 20-24 psi. Will they be up to the task?
I run two MSD LS1 coils for my leading & two standard LS1 coils for my trailing. Half-bridge 13B-REW, Turbonetics T-66 @ 23 psi of boost with 20% aux methanol injection. No breakup all the way down to 10:1, B10EGV plugs all around. I run mine at 5 ms charge time.
I was experiencing some breakup with the stock LS1s on the leading side, it was at lower boost and with a very conservative timing curve. Looking back, I probably could have eliminated the breakup with more timing, but I opted to go with the MSD coils and it cleared up the breakup instantly. They're $80 a piece and I figured I'd need them to achieve my eventual power goals. They're pretty beefy, almost double the width of the stock LS1 coils. At some point I plan on upgrading my trailing coils to the MSDs as well.
Considering the boost level and fuel you're planning on using, I'd recommend the MSDs at least for the leading. Or you can try the standard coils and if you get breakup, upgrade to the MSDs.

No. He seems to only care about his own coils.. He pushes them to death..
I figured i'd put him on the spot so he could prove how good his coil really is..
I swapped LS1 to MSD coils and the car (TT VIPER) runs much better and doesn't miss anymore. What i like about the MSD Coil also is we can now also use a CDI and bypass the built in igniter... So the coil can be used either way...
Only downfall is that its not cheap...
