little man with jackhammer sound help!!!!

alright guys...ever since i went single...i have had this "little man with a jackhammer" sound coming from the turbo...there is no signs of exhaust leaks or anything...all gaskets are in place and all is tightened down. it sounds like it is the turbo itself that is making the noise. does any one else have this noise??? turbo is a garret 62-1...please help...its driving me crazy

is the idle smooth aside from the sound? are three any shaft play, or signs of wear on the fins of the compressor and turbine?

as a longshot.... when was the last time you changed your spark plugs? very fouled up plugs and bad ignition can sometimes sound like a jackhammer.

did you just slap the turbo on and not changed the programming of your computer? this happened to me because when my to4r was installed the programming on the power fc was not changed and it instantly fouled up the plugs moments after startup.

It sounds to me like it's just the sound of a pulsing rotary at idle. I've heard a few FDs that make sounds like you describe.

It has been my experience that the tubular manifolds let some sounds out that are not as audible with the heavy cast iron manifolds. This might be what you are experiencing as well. I wish there was a good way to quiet things down again, but I don't know what, if anything, will help.

If you have 1680 secondaries it could be the injectors, esp if you no longer have an FPD. If it were under boost, I would say it is the EBC solenoid. Carl

I just went single myself and have the sounds you describe. Max is dead-on. The thin skin of the exhaust header can't match the sound deadening qualities of the stock cast manifold. Do as I am about to, call JEGS and get some exhaust header wrap. $38 for 50' of 2 inch wide tape. It should help with the noise, and especially with the heat thrown onto the LIM.

Live with the sound. No reason to **** away money on a part that does'nt increase performance.

Grocery store? There were a bunch of A&P grocery stores where I grew up (SE Michigan).

I have thought about header wrap. It should definitely help with the sound, but I am concerned about it cracking or eroding the manifold. Ceramic coating it first might help, but I've heard that it doesn't last long on the turbo manifold. I wonder if a looser-fitting blanket might offer some sound abatement without hurting the manifold.

you're right.... the ceramic coating doesnt last long, im not sure if its the smooth finish of the ss autochrome manifold or the excessive heat, but mine started to crack and flake off after 1000 miles or so. as soon as it gets warmer out, im gunna wrap them with exhaust wrap also to dampen the noise.

oh yeah.... hood lining helps a lot when it comes to lowering the sound coming from the engine bay.
