TX lets build my turbo set up

i have an 84 SE which i really want to turbo, im getting a salvage engine and having it rebuilt, ill put this motor on a motor mount so that i can build off of it(like put alternator, and other things on before i put it in the engine bay.

I want to use a GT35R Turbo, i just know what else goes into the set up to make it run good. I have been reading the forums and have found out little by little, and keep reading to learn even more. There are a bunch of things that i have left unanswered such as, where does in CAI come into play, i see a bunch of turbos with air filters in the middle where the turbine is. does get cycled through the intercooler or does 50/50 go through it, just things like that.....

as you can see im kind of uneducated which is why i need help to figure out all the parts i need, and what exactly goes on in a turbo set up.

Hope you guys can help a fellow 1st gen owner out.

-standalone engine management
-new fuel system(pump/s, rails, injectors, lines)
-rebuilt engine is a good idea
-clutch/flywheel
-exhaust manifold, wastegate, dp
-intercooler
-radiator
-most important, a good tune

those are just a few of the basic things needed. it can be very costly to do it correct. hope that short list helps

just to help heres a list of good standalones that work well with rotary

-Haltech E6X
-Microtech LT10s
-Electromotive
-AEM
-Greddy E-Manage
-HKS PRO F-Con

all are good but Haltech and Microtech are my personal favorites not only because they have the best bang for your buck but also because they are both proven most rotary lovers with turbos systems use those... Good Luck man ill keep helping as much as i can... i just finished my lil puppy so i know the negatives and the positives..

freaking awsome, i just looked up the haltech, would i need to keep a laptop in the car to tune on the fly, or can you tune, then leave the laptop at home?. also i figure I would need to remove the old brains. are the old brains located under the aluminiun floorboard of the passenger side?

you need to have a laptop to tune the haltech. If i were you i would use the haltech e8 instead of the e6x... if you are dead set on an e6x i have one collecting dust...pm if you would like

You have a 1st gen GSL-SE correct? That's going to add to the mess. I don't know about the 1st gen 13b n/a motors but the 2nd gen n/a 13B's can have clearance issues with bolting up turbos due to the intake manifold shape/design.

i have the microtech lt10s and i tuned it on my laptop but i also have a hand controller that lets u make adjustments like a laptop would... but i would have to say that if you want a proper tune use a laptop and a dyno... and dont worry once you have a map built for the car you can take your laptop out u dont have to keep it in the car... as far as ur old wiring harness goes, you wont need it... jus keep the clamps and the plugs and stuff for the wiring harness for the EMS u buy.. to do the wiring harness its easy but you should have someone who knows ALOT about car help you, i did mine myself when i was 19 and i did it first try.. but good luck and if you need any kind of help man just give me a holler... i kno wat its like to no have any help...

I can't even imagine fitting a larger than stock turbo on an FC 6 port engine with the stock intakes. Maybe with an electric fan and a custom manifold that moved the turbo further towards the front of the car. I would get some TII manifolds and port match them. Another annoying part about keeping the stock intakes is all the piping being on the same side of the engine, and the extra bend caused by the upper intercooler piping being on the wrong side. Not to mention removing and installing is a complete PITA and involves cutting a combination wrench, lol.

so i have recently found out as i dig deeper into my car that the electrical is kind of messed up, so should i just clear out the car to a bare nothing, including wires so i can completely redo the electrical and put in the new ecu and all that fun stuff...

here is what ive come up with so far

2nd gen turbo engine
2nd gen TII tranny
microtech lt10 (could someone find me a price on that)
GT35R turbo.
2nd gen alternator

Things im still trying to figure out

BOV(i heard the greddy one is pretty alright, or the hks BOv)
what to use to light my spark plugs instead of my distrubitor(like an msd or something)
radiator
IC

i know im leaving a bunch of stuff out, but we will get to that

-the greddy type S bov is probably the best sounding ever
-well i use msd 8207 coils with msd wires which work well..
-NGK spark plugs
-Microtech LT10s is $1195 (price just went up)
-id also recommend the X4 ignition box to go with the microtech its just an extra $100
-Fluidyne Racing Radiator
-for inter cooler i just baught a huge front mount and had the pipes fabricated

The compressor inlet (middle) is the vacuum side, standalone users stick a filter there and stock ECU people have an intake pipe with an AFM.

Assuming you're using a front mount, you could bolt the intercooler on, and even run your AFM and filter on the inlet side if you really wanted to...

im a lil confused, but n/a cars dont use intercoolers because theres nothing pushing air through it which is where the turbo comes in... an n/a engine would have an intake but not an intercooler. now you can put an intake pipe on the mouth of the turbo leading to a good cool air spot with a filter at the end of it..

if i were u wat i would do is find the entire drive train to a turbo II and drop it in your car... i mean tranni, drive shaft, rear end, and engine, then start upgrading from there
