Joining the club, FD S475 Build!

Hey guys! We'll the times come to change my setup for the first time since i completed my single swap back in 08 and with everyone making awesome power on the S400 series turbos i decided to follow that trend as well. This is a 100 percent do it yourself build for cost reasons. All work is being done at Neal's (Islander on this forum- heres his S475 widebody thread too, https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...debody+%2BS475 ) house as i dont have a garage and its getting a little cold here now. I'm by no means a fabricator, and this is my first time building a kit (manifold, i/c piping, and exhaust) from scratch so im really excited to test myself.

The old setup consisted of a Holset Wh1E, 4in exhaust, 550 1600 combo, supra pump, water/meth, and the motor is streetported.

Alright now that thats out of the way heres what everyone looks for anyway, Pics

Car as of now, along with Islanders gorgeous widebody

turbo- S400 75mm ETT with 96mm exhaust and T6 1.32 hotside.

Old setup...

Out with the old

Goodies

Super high tech mount for the mock up, dont hate haha

Thats all for now stay tuned for progress updates and any question or suggestions please post up and let me know!

That's a very large turbo. What rpm do you expect to see 1 bar boost?

I see full boost at 4k with my s475. He will see full boost at 5600-5800. We have the same turbo but his has the 1.32 rear housing, while mine has a custom t6 .80 rear.

from what i hear the BW s-400 series turbos spool quite decently regardless of their ginormous size. but that 1.32 housing is going to turn it into a dyno queen regardless. way too big, will turn the power band a bit too wild IMO.

Did somebody say power band?

13B-RX3's S475 13B dyno sheet. In fairness, this is a semi-pp, but I haven't seen any other S475 dyno sheets.

i don't think most people plan on going to 10k, in all fairness most go to 8-8.5 so the turbo really hits at ~6k, that gives you a 2.5k RPM power band or 3k if you push it to 9,000(10k requires balancing, billet flywheel and a scatter shield. if you like having legs/feet that is).

so basically you're out of the efficiency range between shifts. all these engines i am seeing with the S400-475 turbos lately aren't being built for the power range you are talking about. lag between shifts = pointless having a massive turbo without going to a higher redline and running an airshifter tranny(airshifters give you a big bump at getting back into your peak power as it doesn't waste that large amount of boost, bumping you up during the gear change since you are always on the throttle).

A lot of that has to do with the porting, like I said. In order to not clutter up this guy's thread, I'll leave it at that, the OP made a good choice in turbos and it will perform wonderfully for him. I haven't seen anyone using that turbo have anything bad to say about it yet.

i never said anything bad about it at all, i also never mentioned that they only come with a 1.32 turbine housing size either(or perhaps they do but there is aftermarket modified sizes available obviously). just for most cases a 1.32 a/r turbine housing is going to be more suited for high RPM usable versus mid range.

Yeah this isnt an autocross car or anything that needs a lot of response. If I wanted to go that route my holset would have been just fine. Lag doesn't bother me one bit but from what ive seen this setup it should be very surprising. The manifold should be done here with the next week or so with christmas coming up. Stay tuned!

You will have a blast driving it! This turbo hits really hard! Just imagine more than doubling HP in a 1000 RPM range!

Updates...

Car is running. The manifold finally got welded and the turbo installed. Its been driving around with no wastegates and no ic piping. Waiting on parts. Final build should go good starting next week. Exhaust is done, whats left is only weld wastegates, new ic piping, water neck piece from defined and put everything back together.

So soon we will see this thing run. I was extremely quick at 24 psi with that blown holset. If catch dont post i will get pics up soon.

Hey guys pics and boost coming this week! Car is driving now but no boost yet cause ive been waiting on my wastegates and the water inlet that defined makes cause the compressor housing hits my water neck in the only position i can run my charge pipes at. The water inlet should be in this week and i just got these from that awesome man in brown, stay tuned!

Also does anyone know if it would be a bad idea to run these gates without water for a short period of time?

Are those the new MV-R water cooled gates? I've heard water cooling is optional, but not required, and obviously recommended. Just plug up the orifice so no dirt gets in there.

Turbo8 they are the MV-S 38mm. I verified today that water cooling is optional. Dropped the manifold off to get the gates fitted in, should be done by the end of this week hopefully then ill some pictures of it.

It's the new MVS wastegates. I have a couple in my shop right now. It's HIGHLY recommended that you water cool them on a rotary! But I still haven't...

You don't need to water cool them. It's not a must..

Also the S475 is a great turbo for any setup that must have over 600hp..

if you don't need over 600hp then you can use smaller framed turbo's.

For a turbo that will make over 800hp the S475 is a great option and drive ability is very good. Hence the reason I built my turbo kit around it. (should be available very soon. )

Quick update:

Car is boosting now. We took it out last night and ran it against mine.
I have a S475 with a 83mm exhaust wheel and a custom .80 t6 rear housing.
He has a S475 with a 96mm exhaust wheel and a standard 1.32 t6 rear housing. At 1 bar starting in 3rd gear and pulling all the way thru 4th we were dead even. We did a low rpm pull in fourth, from about 2k. That's where I pulled him nice. My gates opened sooner and I was in power before him. But who races in 4th starting at 2k. The car is quick as hell and has the supporting mods for him to get it into the 20-25psi range. We will keep u posted on numbers soon.

On a side note, while enjoying some spirited driving my TWEAK-IT racing idler pulley seized up on me. What an ordeal! From a 8pm cruise time to not getting home off the tow truck til 12 midnight, was so much fun. Catch even took off his belt to get my car running, but my main pulley was too small.
