Smile How to tell the difference between a single turbo or twins

Hi

I recently bought a 94 FD and theres just a few days left for it to come here. When i went through the pics and the videos i always thought it was a single turbo but then one of my friends looked at the video and said its a twin turbo as you can see the two filters, another said if you can find the intercooler then you know you have twins.
Can someone please help me distinguish between a single and a twin?

Ok, I guess not.... The easiest way to tell the difference is to look on the left side of the engine, a single turbo will be VERY noticeable, the twins will almost look like they are buried in there. Also, you can typically recognize a twin setup based off it's "Y-Pipe", the pipe that collects compressed air from both turbos and routes it towards the intercooler. The y-pipe is either black plastic or metal and it runs between the alternator and the coolant fill neck. Also, twin turbo cars will usually have dual intakes, if they only have one large filter element than there will be two separate pipes leading out the back of it.

Here is a picture of my engine bay when I still had twins, notice the y-pipe running next to the alternator before joining up with the IC piping:

And here is an updated picture with a single setup:

And remember, if you dont cut the red vac line before the odo hits 0... the motor might blow.

Your car still has the twins on it, looks to be pretty much stock under the hood as well, aside from the intakes.

Also, you're really gunna want to cover up that hole in your stock IC ducting.

The idea behind having ducting is to direct air flow to, and through, the intercooler. When you have a huge hole in your ducting like that you're simply providing all that air an avenue of escape, you can't really force air through the IC like that.

Long story short, if you don't cover it up your intake temps won't be as cold as they could be.

Oh dear.... note to self: Keep my mouth shut next time!

Good luck man, and I'd suggest some form of water/methanol injection as one of your first mods. That will REALLY help lower the intake temps and protect your engine.

will do sounds interesting, do you know anything bout these new gadgets called engine decarbonizer, they say it reduces the carbon build up in ur engine and increases the efficiency of burnin fuel which also gives a slight increase in hp... this true? they said i can get upto extra 100km\60miles per tank...

They are un-necessary if you have water injection. Hell, they are un-necessary if you have a rotary. You can clean out carbon from your engine using nothing more than a parking lot, a long vacuum and a gallon of demineralized water. http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/3r...injection.html

Dig around on that site, they have some good info.
