How to see if turbo is blown?

How do you check if the single turbo is blown? Either my car is spitting oil in internally and making lots of white smoke...or the turbo seal is blown. But i dont know which one it is. How do i check for these...I know that when i pulled out my spark plugs...and cranked the motor, the front rotor spit out more black stuff then the rear one did.

who built the motor?

gas in oil with 0 boost and 1 mile...side seals properly aren't clearanced properly.

or maybe an oil control ring issue...maybe builder installed the springs wrong, could cause oil smoking and possibly fuel to slip into the oil fairly easily.

it's too bad the only way I know to check is to tear the engine down.

Did you guys use all new oil control and oil control o-rings?

Did you use the old oil control rings to press in the new ones?

that's about all i can think of right now.

*Edit* Correct me if i'm wrong, but, isn't it expected to burn oil till the engine is broken in and all seals are properly "seated" Now i'm not sure how much oil your burning though.

im pretty sure its supposed to be smoking a bit. but i dont know why it would be smoking to the point where i cant drive it. cause thats just asking to be pulled over. it smokes so much my neighbors ran over to my house cause they thought it was on fire. i believe we used the old ones and put new seals in them.

dude, i having the same problem with the jspec I just put in my car. smokes all the time!!! I think it's the turbo because when I took it off and looked in the manifold it was still clean. try taking the turbo off if it's not to much work, thats one way to tell.

Also, if a turbo had a decent amount of shaft play would that cause it to leak oil because I've gone through 2 turbos both with some shaft play and both smoke, one not as bad as the other but enough thats it's not driveable

my car started smoking recently at idle only but if i rev up the motor the smoke goes away for a few seconds, no smoke on cold start and no smoke under boost. i have a little bit of shaft play from side to side but it's verry minimal and no in and out play, can anyone tell me if this is my turbo and why it would be smoking? turbo still spools just fine.

I'm having this problem... here's a link to my discussion in the 3rd Gen forum. I should have checked here first... I'm new to the forum and sometimes don't have the best grasp of the obvious
