How loud is your turbo?

So I've been driving around my newly built streetported/A-spec 500r setup to break in the motor in order to get a tune. Basically staying out of boost and under 3-4k. As I start to accelerate, when I hit around 3k or so, I start hearing what sounds like the spooling of the turbo, but for not even going into boost, it sounds pretty loud/louder than it should.

The thing is, I feel like I'm hearing it through my drivers side window and not my passenger side. I don't know if it could be my AI system (nozzle mounted in the Greddy Elbow) but #1 there is no water in the reservoir and would it even be spraying if I'm not in boost?

I just was wondering if it is common sound and nothing is wrong with my turbo and/or anything else.

you don'thave anything to worry about. The noise your describing is just the turbo spooling. You won't be able to hear your A/I spraying..

Yea, not the AI.

The BB turbo experience i had definitely always sounded like a boost leak/ turbo spool. Even moments after the car was off.

but it could be a boost leak if not just a loud turbo.

but you really shouldn't even have the AI system active if you're going to be driving around with the reservoir empty. remove the fuse until you are ready to use it.

When I turn the car off, I can hear the turbo spool down. I'm just hoping that the CHRA is getting enough oil. As some of you may know, I had a problem with the oil feed fitting into the CHRA leaking. The fitting and gasket that I got stopped the oil leak, but on the CHRA, the hole is a little offset from the bolts where this flange is straight across.

Here is the picture of the CHRA with the old oil feed fitting. You can see that the feed hole is off center from the two bolts on the side. Also is a picture of the flange that I tried to jerry-rig but it still leaked. As you can see, the hole is not centered across the bolts line.

Here is the flange that I am using, I have a restrictor and oil is getting to the turbo, but I just don't know if having the hole slightly off center is going to cause any damange/not enough oil to it.

Ball bearing turbos literally only need a few drops of oil, they don't require much. Journal bear turbos that use oil as an effective liquid bearing require much more.

if you can see all the way to the oil passage in the turbo i wouldn't worry about it, the ball bearing CHRA do not require as much oil as the journal bearing CHRAs anyways. it would have to be a massive leak for the bearings to be starving of oil, literally even if you removed the line and aimed it at the hole it would probably still be ok.. heh.

Alright well that's comforting. The last thing I'd want to do is be damaging my turbo. 200 miles down on the motor, 800 more to go lol...

yep, but that's still strange that the passage is offset. i thought Garrett had higher standards than that.. at least i'm pretty sure the 500r uses a 35r CHRA, could be wrong.

edit: just checked the 35r(GT3571r) i have in the box and it doesn't appear that it is so nevermind that statement, or at least it is not the newest style 35r CHRA.

Haha yes I know, but I just never heard a turbo spool like this before. Maybe it's because the turbo cars I've driven, I can't really hear it since they are smaller twin turbo setups, but I am not even trying to go into boost and I can hear it starting to spool up. We will see as I continue breaking the motor in.

Just because your boost gauge reads vacuum, does not mean the turbo is not spooling.

I have (2) boost gauges, one at the intake manifold nipple, and one on the turbo compressor housing.

When my intake manifold boost gauge is at 5"hg, my turbo compressor boost gauge is at 3-4 psi.

Or you could have a boost leak, or your turbo couplings are installed incorrectly.

You're going to need a big stick to keep the LGPD from popping your hood.

My car looks stock on the outside. Don't give them a reason to pull you over and you'll be fine. I had an 05 GTO before this with LT headers, large cam, no cats and running open headers and they never hassled me.

As far as the sound goes, I'm wondering if it is a pulley issue. During idle it started squealing a bit but then went away. This sound that I originally described doesn't start coming on until around 3k and I swear it doesn't really sound like a turbo spooling but I may be wrong.

Oh yeah? I could never stand the thought of them crushing my car if they caught me by some incident. Who's your favorite smog shop?

Man there's no better sound than a spooling turbo, freaking love it! Remember the huge difference in sound from when I switched to open KN air filter...

Just to update, it wasn't my turbo like I thought. The belts/pulleys have started to squeal louder. It's either my PS or idler pulley it sounds like. Going to check them out this weekend.

if you have a noisy belt it is often the water pump pulley.

with the engine off grasp it and try to turn it.... many will find it is easy to turn.

also, just as an FYI, the turbo is always spinning even when not delivering positive boost.

good luck,

howard

The 500R with the ported housing they use, makes the turbo sound louder.
