How Critical is an Upgraded Ignition

How critical is an upgraded ignition to run ~15 psi. I'm putting in a Precision 6266, running stock ports with ID1000's and ID2000's on a 13B-REW.

I'm kicking around putting in AEM Coil Packs, but also wondering if its critical. Have many had success getting to ~400HP with the stock FD coils without it breaking up?

Stock coils alone won't really cut it, at the minimum you'll want an HKS Twin Power. The Mercury Marine/AEM IGN-1A coils are a great upgrade!!

Personally I'm going the IGN-1A route this winter, replacing good condition coils/Twin Power with them. I'm also doing that because I run 2-3oz/gal of premix and I was fouling my plugs with just the twin power.

All depends on the condition of your coils.

If they are in good condition and you don't plan on adding water you will likely experience no breakup at those boost levels. However, if they are towards the end of their life cycle you will likely have problems.

With water it is an entirely different subject all together.

The stock coils are actually really good if they are healthy even without a twin power. Personally, I'm not convinced that the AEM coils are a benefit over stock+twin_power without converting to direct fire. I don't think they are any worse though either.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. One of my coils is brand new and the other two have 58k miles on them. I have new plug wires as well. This single turbo build is gonna bankrupt me.. so just trying to make sure i really need stuff rather than just continuing to throw money at it to make it 'perfect'

Sounds like I can give the stock coils a shot and pick up a twin power if I run into issues.

That's good news as the leading is the one I replaced not too long ago.

Stock coils with Twin Power support over 500HP.

I've done 476 to the wheels with NEW stock coils, wires, and NGK 10.5 race plugs. That being said the plugs did foul quickly. For most setups I recommend a Twinpower. The AEM coils are great and provide a much stronger spark than stock or even a Twinpower. I was able to get a car to start with an injector stuck open with that setup. It really depends on budget and what you want to do.

this is the big bang for the buck, when you fire the coil once per revolution of the crank shaft instead of twice, you instantly double the charge time available. with the RPM the rotary turns the stock coils probably do not have enough time to charge fully near redline.

yep you certainly can. the only thing you want to avoid is running a leaner mixture to avoid misfire, ideally you want to increase ignition power so you can run the mixture you want

I agree with Mike, if you find yourself making power on the dyno leaning out the mixture- STOP and upgrade your ignition and try again.

My FC has 2x LX92 coils fired by 2x HI-6s on the leading plugs and stock trailing ignition. Only 380rwhp at 14psi power levels.

My car made a little hp above 6,000rpm leaning out AFRs from high 9s low 10s to high 10s low 11s on the dyno.

It did not gain any further power leaning it out from high 10s low 11AFRs so we left it there.

Same with ignition advance, it did not yield gains so we left it at the conservative settings I came in with.

I was there for the pulls and the car had a full tank of 110 so it was not a scared dyno operator just telling me this.

Like others have said, stock coils and twin power is all you need.
