HKS TO4Z setup

Hi All

I have a 96 FD with a HKS TO4Z single setup, my engine and related mods are listed below:
  • HKS T04Z Turbine
  • HKS Exhaust Manifold
  • HKS GT II 60mm Wastegate
  • Trust Air Filter
  • Apexi N1 Race Exhaust
  • Custom Front Pipe
  • Apexi Power FC ECU and Commander
  • Apexi Power FC Boost Controller
  • HKS Type M Spark Plugs
  • HKS Racing BOV
  • Apexi GT Spec Intercooler
  • World Fuel Surge Tank and Pump
  • Greddy Compression Tube
  • Defend Pulley Kit
  • 850cc Primary Injectors
  • 1600cc Secondary Injectors
  • High Capacity Oil Pump
  • Cusco Oil Catch Tank
  • ARC Radiator
  • Defend Engine Damper
  • Intercooler Water Spray Kit
  • 2 x ARC Oil Coolers
  • Carbing Radiator Swirl Pot
  • Motor bulilt by rotary specialists in Japan

i have had the car dyno-tuned on AVGAS (100LL) here in south africa because pump fuel is of poor quality. from this forum i have learned that what we have is equivalent to 91/93 octane in the US. i am running around 1.35Bar (20PSI) boost.

my question is about the potential of the setup. the dyno results averaged 285-304wkw at around 6500rpm. is it possible to get 350-375wkw from this setup, and if so where should i be looking? previous owner claimed 320wkw which is more than i have seen.

i am not sure if the motor has been ported and if it is, what kind of porting was done.

the car is built for the track and runs well.

Everything always needs to be spot on to get to the upper limits.

Decent mild port (not necessarily big but big helps when hunting for numbers)
4" dump pipe
3.5" exhaust system with a single straight through muffler
Wastegate open to atmosphere
No catalytic converter
Intercooler with low pressure drop (talking ballpark 0.5 to 1.0psi AT FULL ENGINE FLOW)
BIG AIR FILTER. Howard Coleman posted specs from K&N RE some 4" filter models with CFM ratings and pressure drops.
Cold air induction preferably with some ram flow effect
Awesome ignition system (HKS twinpower is meant to work OK)
Awesome spark plugs (probably R7420 in a cold heat range)
Some water injection, minimum 400cc/min from 4000rpm pref way more like 600-1000cc/min at fulll noise at that power level.
Enough turbine housing for the task at hand. 1.15-1.32 is really going to help lower turbine back pressure on engine.

A good motor build. Now that is hard to find. I'm talking brand new housings, brand new seals throughout. Every single part checked and replaced if outside of spec. Immaculately clearanced side seals. Slightly raised oil pressure.

When you have everything good for the task at hand power comes really easy.

Here is a T04Z build I did. Going to be raising the boost with higher octane fuel to make more power in the next couple months.

teh dyno sheet says its a "Hyper Power Dynamometer"...from memory it was a full load rolling dyno.

my dyno graph is attached for further comment by the forum.

RPM, that is one nice looking ride!

i am stoked to see you make those power figures on 15PSi and 91 pump gas!

i have been hoping that this is the case. but looking for some confirmation before pulling the motor apart. it has been running so well on the track for the last two years..never skipped a beat...i am really nervous to open it up!

for track racing, whats more reliable street porting with bridgeport or without?

The engine I built for that Veilside Widebody used all brand new Mazda parts, rotor housings, irons, all new seals obviously including ALS apex seals.

I guarantee that is why this engine made such good power.

Dont start some insane debate on what is more reliable. Just do a nice small streetport.....you can always go bigger later on. You cant fill in bridge-ports.

i have a spare second hand motor that i plan to use for the rebuild, however its unlikely i will be able to go the route of brand new parts...

if i could get to 500whp or 375wkw i would be pretty happy. a longer earlier power band would aslo be nice.

Something is not right with the graph. The torque is almost 500 ft lbs at 5000 rpm but the HP is very low. So is it in Kw or m-kg/sec instead?

browsing through some of the other threads, i have picked up on the fact that my ignition system appears to be pretty standard - im no expert on this aspect and there appears to be nothing aftermarket in the engine bay. would a spark amplifier and MSD coils with appropriate leads, lead to some further improvements in power?
