Help with Turbine Confusion...
The first pic is the turbine that came on this turbo, T04B, .6 A/R .96 turbine, V trim:
It's an on-center .96 AiR turbine with a 4 bolt DP flange already welded on, but I have no idea what trim it is. The comp housing says a V trim, but can the comp and turbine be different trims or are they always the same? I can't measure the turbine fins accurately because my micrometer isn't capable of expanding to that size. I kind of eyed it with a ruler on top of the fins and I came up with about 6cm and 7.5cm respectively. I know I need those two values to figure the trim, but I don't know how.
I bought this .96 tang turbine not knowing the trim, but took a gamble to see if it might fit...and of course it doesn't.
So, first thing I need is to find the trim of the newly acquired turbinr housing so I can sell it. How can I do that...just measure the wheel opening? Next, sell the on-center housing and hopefully have enough loot between the two sales to get the correct turbine. I believe this is the one I need, from Turbonetics part #20693-5...assuming Stage V and V trim are the same???? Also, there's no price on that part number, and Turbonetics doesn't seem to be the best at customer service. I've emailed them repeatedly with no response. Any other suggestions as to where I could possible get the correct turbine for this turbo?

Compressor has a trim and turbines have a trim. They are two completely different things. Every turbo charger has a compressor trim and turbine trim along with A/R values for the comp housing and turbine housing. Every thing I just stated can be mixed and matched up. In general, theres no one trim or name to describe a turbo charger since A/R and trim levels are all interchangable (with the exception of some turbo manufactures that don't offer different parts/trim levels or A/R's).
If its a T4 based turbine (most likely is) your turbine trims are as follows from smaler to larger: N,O,P,Q and R trims. N,O, and P all have a major/inducer diameter of 2.922". Q and R having a larger 3.111". The minor/exducer diamters are all different and what determines the trim of turbine. N having 2.071", O having 2.296", P having 2.544", Q having 2.693" and R i dont have a measurement for, but its close to a 0 trim so its exducer is very close in size as its inducer.
In order to find out what trim you have, you just going to have to measure it accurately period. Eye balling with a ruler wont cut it.
Lastly, pray that you have a P-trim turbine. P-trim is best suited for a rotary engine at low to moderately high power levels with medium sized compressors. Big power goes to the Q trim, but the Q trim should be approprietly matched with a larger compressor wheels. If yours is an O-trim, it will be ok, but just a little small. Don't expect huge numbers if its an O-trim turbine. They tend to choke up your mid/high end of your power band. Hell, even a stage III T3 turbine flows more then the N T4 and nearly as much as the O T4.
All turbine housings come in different A/R values AND have a trim level so it matches the turbine wheel its supposed to house. EX: lets say you have a P-trim turbine and your looking for a .96 A/R turbine in a tang. It'll have to be a .96 A/R, Tang, P-trim turbine housing.
Just a suggestion, research a little more before you buy things. You have two useless turbine housings and if the turbine on the turbo is too small (like a N trim or even a T3 sized turbine wheel) you now have a useless turbo as well.

The more I screw with this thing, the more I want to get rid of it. I bought it because the seller had to get rid of it 'cause he was broke and needed the loot(so he says)....I'm starting to believe otherwise. I'm sure I could rid of it on eBay for what I paid, and get a T04E like I wanted in the first place.
Is there any way I can measure the tubine housing to determine the trim? I don't see anywhere on it where it says the trim...

Yes you can measure them, Jimmy. You can measure both the co mpressor and the turbine wheels, respectively. Get out your dial caliper! There's two "parts" to a compressor and turbine wheel -- the minour and the majour. The minour is the skinnier portion (known as the inducer; it's the visible part of either wheel) and the majour is the larger, wider part. Get those to me here in this thread and I'll tell you exactly what turbo you've got.

Actually, its minor and major wheel diameters. The major diameter is going to always be the larger portion of the wheel be it compressor or turbine. The minor will always be the smaller portion of the turbine and compressor. BUT, on the compressor, the minor (smaller) wheel diameter is the INDUCER, while the Major portion of the wheel (larger) is called the EXDUCER. Its the exact opposite for the turbine. The larger diameter (major) is called the inducer of the turbine, conversly the smaller portion of the wheel (minor) is called the EXDUCER.
Just think of it like this, which portion of the wheel does what? Does it inhale (induce) or exhale (exduce)?

Gotcha, I was measuring the right diameters, but I don't have a dial caliper handy and my eyes aren't QUITE good enough for accuracy of 1/1000ths of an inch. Would lasek surgery help?

I got a dial caliper yesterday and these are my measurements:
minor: 2.291
major: 2.920
Looks like I have an O trim.
This thing is hitting eBay.

How can I measure the other turbine to se what trim that is? The above pic shows it on an O trim wheel, you can see how far away it is from the fins...if I had to guess, I'd say a P trim.

When I first bought it, I didn't want a high HP car. BUT, the more I think about it, I'd like to be at the 400RWHP mark. That will obviously require a bigger turbocharger. So, I'm back on the market looking for something that will suit my needs...
I didn't spend a lot on this turbo, so I'm hoping to get most of my money back and maybe even make a little when I post it on eBay.

I'd be all over it, but the OC housing won't fit on my HKS log. I'd be all set if his turbine wheel was a P trim, but he hasn't answered my question yet. I don't have the loot to buy the 60-1BB AND spend another 2 bills on the tang housing that I need for it to work. If your 60-1 has a tang housing, what are the rest of the specs on it? Are you on AOL IM?
