Help Me Choose A Turbo

I dont want anyone flaming me as im interested in the opinions of others. i have a 87 TII with a JSpec S5 TII engine. im looking to get 500rwhp with a large streetport. but i wanna run this kit for a year or two without the port. i was wondering what turbo everyone would choose to hit 500rwhp on a large streetport. Im gonna be running the Haltech E6X. I wanna buy from Street Machine Performance as i had good history with them and i narrowed it down to a few from this selection. please tell me which you would choose and why. thanks alot for all your help guys.

Nice dude.

If your aiming that High looks like I will not be the only high HP 13B FC around here anymore.

Good luck in your build.

T-72, TA45, T78, or a GT42R are all excellent choices, but you're going to have to push some pretty serious boost (20+ psi) to make 500 rwhp. If you have to buy one of the turbos listed on that page to make 500 rwhp, I would go with one of the GT42 variants. Though you (and your wallet) might be more than happy with a GT35R making 450 rwhp.

thanks ian, dont ask me why but as long as iv known rotaries i was under the impression i had to do a port and rebuild to put on a kit. thats why i wasnt wild about it. so now im gonna make my own kit and run it for a year before doing the large streetport and rebuild.

i dont understand why the GT35R is $1799 and the GT42 is $1049 when the 42 can hold ALOT more hp, does watercooled make that much of a difference?

GT35 R is a ballbearign turbo , while the GT42 is a non ballbearing turbo, If you compare a GT35R to a GT42R there much closer in price.

Oh yeah. The price difference between the two is unreal! But then again the difference in spool time is really nice too.

I would not suggest getting a e6x. I have one and it gave us problems for 6 months. Alot of forum members have had to ship their back to AUS to get fixed. Get a used e6k and most of the time it will come with the harness for plug and play. Don't make it hard on yourself trust me. And for a turbo I would suggest something from Precision turbo. A few forum members have hit 500 with 2nd gen motors with thier pT67 and pT74. Their is a 10 day wait on these now. Ask me how I know. Oh and if no one told you, on a dual ball bearing rebuilds are not cheap and easy. You just buy another dual ball bearing turbo. Something to consider

Pt turbo's arent bad, I have setup a few here. I prefer the Garrett 42R over the two(67-74) listed. Just seems to hit better. As far as the rebuilding a GT BB turbo I have repaired them numerous times it's not that bad. Just depends on how badly you damage it.

didn't mention a manifold, downpipe or intercooler pipes.

there are some pretty decent kits out there for ~3k-3500

anywhere..
gotham has the gr63 or 67 (i think) kit
aspec has the 35 or 40r kit
rx7store has a bunch of stuff..

i got a really good deal on a new 35/40, then got a discontinued blitz manifold for $500, and found a used hks standard wastegate, oil feed and return lines, and downpipe for a few hundred bucks. my whole setup cost me around $2100.. i might have to have the dp modded a bit, but even with that and welding the w/g flange on, it MIGHT come out to 22-2300ish.

if you'e willing to get some parts used, you'll save a bundle. my turbo and manifold are new, but what's the difference between a new and used oil line...just as long as it doesn't leak. it's not really a "wearable" item.

the manifold i got--to answer your question, was from a blitz fc turbo kit that never came to pass. brian galloway (japan2la) had a few of them and i got the last one. he might be able to order you one though. it just might be a little more expensive because it's gotta get shipped in from japan. it's got some wierd 3 bolt wastegate flange on it and it IS for an fc.. i figured if it doesn't fit correctly, i'd cut the pipes and tilt it over--no biggie.

you can get a lot of power reliably if you know WHERE to compromise.

i think a 35r is a little on the small side for 500whp, but lots of guys make 400ish with low boost levels on pump gas. maybe a 40r or t61 might be a little more along the lines you're looking for, but i don't know how much room you want to grow.
