Has APEXi fixed the wastegate problem?

Apexi's IHI RX6 turbo kit included a now infamous wastegate that many customers found to stick under high heat (expansion). My question is- Has anyone who has purchaced an Apexi wastegate after 2001 had any problems? Do the new wastegates have the same bolt pattern as the old ones did?

Thanks,
Max

I've had no problems with mine, even after multiple consecutive autoX runs in ~100 degree temps.

I have seen the price sheet for the RX6 kit with a "water cooled wastegate", which seems like it may be the solution that they came up with. I haven't seen the water cooled wastegate.

My A'PEXi wastegate would stick from doing time trials (30 minutes on a track). I think for street, drag, and autoX the A'PEXi wastegate is probably fine. It might be a good idea to get a pop off valve just in case, however.

I have heard of people having the valve guide enlarged slightly (0.003", I think) by a machine shop that does piston engine heads. It is similar to a valve guide, so they should be able to do it. I think I heard that that worked for some people but not for others, however.

I replaced it with the HKS Stainless Steel Racing wastegate (which is different from the plain Racing wastegate). It bolts right to the manifold using the same bolt pattern, though it would be a good idea to use slightly longer studs. The dump tube bolt pattern is close but just slightly different. You can slot the holes on the A'PEXi dump tube flange or replace the flange with the HKS one. The position is close enough to the A'PEXi wastegate that it bolts up just fine once the dump tube flange is modified or replaced.

I had my valve guide on the wastegate honed by a machine shop and it seems to be working fine now

Max,

I have heard that stainless wastegates crack from the heat.

Weaklink,
Who told you SS cracks? Have you heard of multiple cases?

Mine has not cracked. I am not really sure which parts of it are SS. It might just be the valve or something. I did not get it for the materials, I got it because it has a different bolt pattern than the non-SS Racing version, and nearly matches the A'PEXi bolt patterns (same on manifold side, close on dump tube).

I am pretty sure TiAL makes wastegates with stainless steel bodies, and they have an excellent reputation for reliability. Plus, their **** is the best looking stuff by far.
