i would have thought that the apexi GT cat would be the one of choice since it has min bends and pretty much str8t threw, common people let me know

Everyone has different threshholds for the sound level they are comfortable with. There are many different kinds of resonated midpipes. No one can answer your question, except you.

"Cat-back" means the exhaust system after the cat. "Cat" means the catalytic converter. Abbreviating "cat-back" to "cat" doesn't work since there are many choices for "cat"s available, too. For the middle section of the exhaust, you can get a "midpipe" which is just a pipe, a "resonated midpipe" which is a pipe with some kind of muffler or resonator in it, or a "cat" which could be the stock cat or one of several different high-flow cats. Those are the popular terms and their meanings. Use them to your advantage.

To me, the A'PEXi GT spec cat-back is too loud for street use with just about any cat or midpipe, but I'm old and tired of driving obnoxiously loud cars. Your tastes are probably different. Bit it will be loud as hell with a midpipe, and I think anyone would get sick of it in a hurry. I suggest that you get the RX-7 Store's Magnaflow resonated midpipe. It should be among the most quiet and still uses a stright-thru muffler. The Magnaflow does a nice job of reducing the annoying raspy sounds. That might work out fine for you.

Because they are so loud you can pick one up cheap. I will be running one with high flo cats and an LS1 soon.

If it's too loud you can always change out the muffler with a 4" in dual out Borla or Magnaflow or something equivalent. Or you could do a dual pipe midpipe to quiet things down. Kinda pricey but you could do a 3" in, y to dual 2.5", run a foot or so of 2.5", y back into a 3.

I always thought the Apexi exhausts were over rated. They're loud, they don't sound good and they're not even that light. The Apexi GT tapers down to 70 mm piping instead of 80 mm creating a bottleneck. I do like other Apexi products too. Here are my recommendations for exhausts...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GReddy Ti for performance. 80 mm piping with 1 mm thick walls leaves a lot of flow area inside and it's the full length of the catback. Minimal bends and only about 10 lbs. Does a good job of muffling with a nice deep tone. It can be had for around $600 which is not much more than a full stainless exhaust.

Performance: 5/5
Sound muffling: 3/5
Sound quality: 5/5
Construction: 5/5
Looks: 3/5
Value: 5/5

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Racing Beat dual tip for style. Performance is really pretty good with full 80 mm piping but thicker walls because of stainless. A few more bends and 2 piece construction likely hurt performance and it's barely lighter than stock. It is very quiet and sounds good. Not too high pitch but not very deep. The dual tips are very nice looking. This is the exhoust the RX-7 should have come with stock.

Performance: 3/5
Sound muffling: 5/5
Sound quality: 3/5
Construction: 4/5
Looks: 5/5
Value: 5/5

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I own both the exhausts above so I am qualified to give the review .
I have seen and heard an Apexi N1 and I would rate it something like this...

Performance: 4/5
Sound muffling: 2/5
Sound quality: 2/5
Construction: 3/5
Looks: 3/5
Value: 2/5

I'm guessing the Apexi GT would be louder and higher performance. Hopefully it wouldn't buzz like the N1.

You also might look at the Corksport 'Power Series' catback which should have good performance for the price ($289) but is probably loud.

I had the Apex GT cat-back w/ a pettit resonated midpipe on my red FD. It was tolerable, but I never was a big fan of the apex exhaust. Very raspy. I have a 4" Greddy Power Extreme now and love it. Also have a 4" dp with it.

i agree with ErnieT, i had the setup and switched between resonated and non-resonated many times, it's tolerable but raspy, i'm not a fan of their exhaust products. i'd say, stick with HKS, GReddy...either way unless you go with a Racing Beat Dual having a single turbo is gonna be loud regardless.

I have the A'pexi GT Spec with a downpipe, and midpipe. At idle the db is at 122 and inside the FD it's at 114db with the windows open. Is the car loud? Hell yeah! However, I love it since I only drive the car on the weekends. As a daily driver, I would highly recommend a different exhaust system. I have tried the Pettit's resonated midpipe and it didn't make much of a difference.

I've seen it under $600 but with extra high shipping costs. Ebay maybe?
