Wink GT40 or TO4s

I'm in the process of ditching my to4e to upgarde to either one of the two.....been lookinkg through the site ...to4s is a very popular turbo and the gt40 seems to be fairly recent.....so not too much solid evidence as yet....I want a turbo that spools up pretty well and will give me good power at least 400 but will also have the reliability assurances that every 7 owner craves...( especially if I want to rebuild)....also to be a good street/strip turbo with good driveability.....I have three days to make my decision........any ideas or other things to think about.....PS i'm using all my to4e kit components......just changing the snail!!

there is tons of info on the forum. just search and you shall find. people are having trouble finding replacement parts for the gt40. the t04s is a good turbo as is the gt35r. the r85 is a great kit as well.

There is no definitive answer, because there is not definitive turbo. 400+ WHP can be made with many different setups. The main variables are cost, spool time, and boost pressure. Choose what best suits you.

T04S is used in a lot of cars, with great results, so you know it works.

T04S (60-1 compressor) is very well proven over and over again. It can give 400 rwhp at right around 1 bar of boost. You said "at least 400", so maybe this won't be for you, as it will run out of juice before too much past 400.

If your target is 400 at 1 bar, the T04S is clearly my pick of the two.

Ok thanks guys! which one will spool quicker and how much power difference between the two....ie which is streetable?...i can get either for about the same price you see.......apparently the gt40 has a .70 a/r with a 61mm inducer... I can have my choice of housings...it has the same compressor section as the gt35r.

the to4s has a .70 a/r with a 60-1 wheel

The gt40 fows 4 ilbs/min more

any other points to consider?

Thanks again!

T04S is one of the standards by which other "streetable" turbos get measured, so it's a very solid pick. GT40 is much newer and so far, I haven't seen any results that suggest it is better than the 60-1 for the street.

What don't you like about your T04E? Did you ever dyno it?

Elnr, I have just (this weekend) fitted a T04S (XS Eng Kit) to my FD. So as I still need to have it mapped I cannot tell you is this meets your needs, but from what I have read it should do.

I can say that a GT35/40 WILL meet your needs, and wil not give you much lag to speak about.

For the GT40... as posted above... people are having hard time finding just a replacement compressor wheel. It appears Garrett does not want to sell just a GT40 compressor wheel (people who have damaged comp. wheels from foreign objects). You may want to ask forum member "Badog" about his experience so far.

If you're looking for a little over 400rwhp, I'd say to go with a T66 or T04R (PT67). I'm sure most turbo's larger than a ~60mm inducer will get you over 400rwhp (very general statement).

We have seen great results out of the XS T04S kit. The nice thing about XS kits is they come complete (BOV, intake and intercooler piping).

The thing people are also forgetting is what sort of porting your engine has. This changes the sort of power you get.

The number you get will depend on the type of rolling road you go on.
The dyno dynamics are very accurate but don't give the inflated numbers of some other rolling roads. Depends on whether you want an aggresive tune of or not also, depends on who maps it and condition of your engine more than anything. I think you will enjoy the to4s with a 1.00 a/r exhaust side.

there are a few aussie cars running gt40's they are getting down some very nice power with excellent response.

i have spoken to the owner of a fb running a fc 13b with a gt40, he is getting close to 300kw at the wheels (should be over 400hp) and is acheiving full boost a tad before 4000rpm.

anyway, good luck with what ever you choose

Well you see, being a bit different may not always be the good thing. The reason why there is such little information regarding the GT40 is because very few people are using them. Until we get more people posting their experiences, we really won't know. The reason you find so much info on the T04S is because it's been tried and true, and has been around for ages.

But give it a try, and maybe you can be one of the first to post your experiences with the turbo.

Harrison, I never got to find out. But it is fitted now, and with the problems I have had fitting it, I will not be taking it off again. Sorry.
