Gt35/40 V.s. T-78

Just what the post said. I know the gt35/40 spools quicker and makes about 410rwhp at 15 psi and the t-78 makes about 430 at 15 psi and is slower spooling. So what would you want, and why?

When I was in the market for a single setup I was trying decide between the two. It all boiled down to what I was going to do with my car. I wanted my car to perform in the real world and not just a track car. The T78 would never reach its full potential until after 20# and I wasn't going to go that high. I knew I would only go to about 22# at the most and to me the GT would out perform the T78 in this category. I would have a lot less lag and still give me plenty of power. I won't have the high peak numbers like the T78 but overall I think it will give me more total power from 7-20#. I'm looking at when the turbo kicks in to when I will be shifting. The T78 will definately lag more than the GT. If you could graph the area between 0-20# of boost versus rpm I think the GT would have a lot more area than the T78. These are the numbers that are important to me. For somebody that will be running >22# I think this would definatly change and the T78 would probably be the better choice. Just my 2 cents.

thanks FOr the info, that what i was looking for. Its good to hear from a gt35/40 owner that he would rather have the t-78at higher boost. What do you think about the gt42/45 silverr1, would that be over kill. Probley only good in the 30 psi number correct. Any t-78 owners wanna say anything.

The reason I went with the Garrett is because I want quick boost response on the street as well as high hp. My car should be done by the end of next week. I'll post dyno numbers and spool times when I get a chance.

Not yet still waiting for everything to get put together. Once I have it all done I'll be sure to update everyone. Not really sure about the other Garrett turbos. You may want to give Sean at A-spec a call or maybe he can answer this question. I know he deals a lot with these turbos and probably knows alot more about the performance of them. I've also heard a lot of good things about the Turbonetics line also. You might want to take a look at them. I really didn't do much research on them because of all the good reviews I got on the Garretts. I ended up paying more for the Garrett but to me I was a better decision for my purposes.

I should have my GT35/40 turbo here next week.

I currently run a T62-1 ceramic BB turbo. I'm not impressed with it (compared to my 60-1 FC that I tuned on the E6K). Furthermore, it failed about a week ago. The CHRA went out and there is major wobble on the shaft causing the compressor wheel to hit the compressor housing. I also heard from a distributor that a few of his 62-1 ceramic BB turbos have failed.
It may be due to the ceramic BB CHRA, but I'm not sure. I wouldn't blame Turbonetics since I've seen good turbos from them.

The GT35/40 supposedly has a very good reliability rate.

I have been in or driven an FD with most of the turbo kits out there. In my opinion the T-78 is at the top of the list. It gets full boost by 4000 RPM and it pulls forever. You dont need to be running alot of boost to use this turbo. Anything over 15lbs and this turbo pulls hard. I use it on the street and have no problems with it. Like most of the single turbos out there you need to be in the correct gear to get it rolling. Its not like the stock twins and spools quick in every gear.

I dont know alot about the GT35/40 kit, but the asking price seems pricey for the performance you are getting.

well its really alot cheaper than your t-78 kit. I got quoted 2,600 for the kit. Not to shabby. Thats another reason i am leaning towards the gt35/40.

Uh, your NOT going to get a GT3540 'kit' for 2,600...period. Especially since A-spec is the only place you can get them at this time...

If you want the GT kit I can get it for you, but the price is close to the $3900 list. If this is the same kit your talking about.

gt35/40

are they not selling the kit anymore at RPM? if they are still selling it, the kit is $2600US shipped from AU. i was quoted $4960 AU shipped for the kit. horsepowerinabox has the turbo on their site for like $1200-1300.

you ar no longer able to get the "kit" from Tim at rpm due to him making A-Spec the US "dealer". if you are like some of us and got in before the deal went down, you were able to get it.
i believe you can still purchase just the turbo from them though for about $1100. but no more manifold and all the rest of it.

as A-spec stated before the reason the price is higher than $2600 is because they eat the shipping costs from Australia,14% duty taxes and the 3.3% credit card charges..actually the kit is only $3600 but if you get the compressor polished/downpie re-routed/complete block off plates and the kit jet coated the price goes up to $3900..still not bad to what Greddy/Apex/hks puts in there kit

i own a T-78 and would rather have the gt, the quicker spool makes all the difference. If you ever plan to autocross or do anythign but race in a straight line i think you'll be happier with the gt. i would replace mine if i could do it over again.

well theres a guy in nz making kits with his own manifold, and downpipe. The mani is steam pressed or you can get it ss. He has just started to make the kit I think he works for rx7 heaven in nz. i dont think its avaliable yet. You are correct you are going to have a pay for the shipping and duty taxes, but i dont think that it will cost another1300 to ship. I dont know what the numbers are on taxes and duties. if those nunbers are correct it will be about 3,000 shipped.Poweraxle are you sure about those numbers?

ok lets use this for example:
$2600
+ $125-150 shipping/courier handling charges = $2750
+ $364 duty taxes (14% in most areas)
= $3114

now lets say you pay by credit card (i think 3.5% is the most common non-swiped rate) of $3600 a-spec base price + $65 shipping =$3665
= about $110 in credit card transaction fees
$3665 - $110 = $3555

now you got $3555 minus $3114 = $441 profit

this doesnt include the block off plates, and other stuff they put in there kits...

while most retailers make a decent profit off highly priced Greddy/Apexi/HKS kits.. a profit this low is not highly robbery

well **** your credit card company is bending you over, if i understand right. Your saying that i have to pay a 3.5 tax on my credit card cause they didnt swipe it? Thats bullshit. i have never heard of that. Maybe there providence tax, but i'm in another country so it dosent apllie to me. And a 400 is a big difference and they do come with oil lines block off plates and fittings. I'm not trying to be a *** but clear this up for me.

Steve is right. When I bought my turbo, FMIC, and haltech from Tim @ RPM shipping, duties, etc was easily over $500...

But, I don't agree with the credit card thing. In fact, I think it is ILLEGAL for any retailer to charge the customers for using a credit card. It is the retailers responsibilty to pay for the ability to accept credit cards from their customers.

Actually, the business vendor can charge whatever they want as far as the credit card charge. It is NOT ILLEGAL since I have lots of friends that are business owners. However, most businesses (big like Wendy's, Walmart) swallow the fees since they are competing in a price way with other vendors.

Shipping and duties are not terribly bad when I ordered my turbo.

Correct, Tim is honoring A-spec's agreement to be the dealer for the "GT35/40 kit" in the US. However, other vendors in NZ or AUS can make their own and sell it.

The turbo is $1300USD as of current currency exchange rate. Add more for exhaust flange, polishing, fittings, heat shield, etc.

I could be wrong, but I thought the "kit" with polishing and ceramic coating comes out to be more than $4k. My memory has been bad since I last talked with Sean and Frank from A-spec.
