GT30 success stories?

I have a S5 13BT, looking for a top HP of around 350 rwhp, and as little lag as possible. Up until now, I'd been considering the GT35R(3540, 3580, whatever they're calling it now), however recently a friend was mentioning that a GT30R has a much broader power band and will boost down lower than a 35r would. I hadn't considered the 30R because I was under the impression that it was just too small for a rotary. However, given my HP goals, perhaps this isn't the case. I scoured the net and only found one guy (Angus from fastrotor.com) who ran one because they didn't have a GT35r at the time and said he was getting 11s on that turbo with a peak hp north of 400! Does anybody else run one or know of somebody who has run this setup? I'm very interested in this turbo as an alternative to the GT35R.

Thanks,
Steve

P.S I'm planning on running this with the stock tmic and a 3" turbo back if it makes a difference.

Try a GT35R with a .82 hot side.

That is what I'm running .70/.82 t3 hotside. they say its restrictive, but I was looking for quick response in the low end. drag racing, autoxing, drifting, etc. I see 15lbs at 3k.

since you're running tmic, i would stick with the 30r. your intercooler would restrict too much for a 35r

what type of porting? stock?

normally i would say get the 35R with a smaller turbine housing A/R, but i think the 30R would be a slightly better fit for your needs.

Yup, stock ports. I'm really just curious where this thing will top out at. I'm sure it will spool faster than anything else out there and have a nice flat torque curve.

It provides sick power at 1.3 bar and above. Anything below feels pretty weak. full boost at 2.7k and rips all the way. It should keep up with a c6 vette and GTO @1.3 bar.

I think another option to consider may be 58/62 you will get the smaller lighter 58mm compressor with better flow of the 62mm turbine. If it were me personally I would run a .8 divided T4 as well. We've had customer run 58/66's and love them for their response and power. My guess is the 30R will start to feel flat with a good bit of RPM left.

I would say go with a GTX3076R and run the amount of boost it takes to reach your goals. I would suggest reconsidering your tmic though.

Check the link in my sig, Same wheel sizes as a GTX3071R

That is 1.7bar off the spring on a 9.4:1 12A. Obviously lighter car than an FC, but its also a 12A not a 13B.

I maintain a huge chart of superimposed 13B dyno graphs, for a future autocross build.

That SSM car has by far the best spool I've charted. It's making decent boost at 2k rpms, which is insane. It's also making ~340 ft-lbs at 3500 rpms, where most cars are making about 200 ft-lbs, also insane. It's running out of breath all the way to redline, but still making decent power. I'm sure it's an animal on an autocross course.

The best spooling "normal" turbos seem to be the GT-30R, the Aspec GT3574 (great spool AND top end), and GT35-based turbos with not-huge hotsides. I would also be looking very closely at the EFR 7670, which has a 57mm compressor, and a very light rotating assembly. Apparently "speedjunkie" has one of these. Efr 7670 - RX7Club.com
