Exclamation GReddy T88 compressor wheel? And word of warning to ppl with greddy kits

I took off my air filter, it is the cheap one that comes with the GReddy kits, if you have one, you know what I’m talking about. Anyway, my compressor wheel is chipped all around, looks like complete hell, I don't have a digital camera or I would have taken a picture. I found pieces of the culprit in the air filter. They were from one of the little plastic bars on the inner frame of the filter holder. The turbo ate about 3/4 of the little plastic bar. So a word to the wise, ditch the GReddy filter if you are still using it.

So now I need a new compressor wheel for my T88 34D. I'm not sure if I can just purchase one somewhere or which shop I should send it to, to have it replaced? Does anyone have any suggestions?

I called www.forcedperformance.com and www.cheapturbos.com today and left them both a message, but they haven't returned my call.

Also, I didn't boost the car after the piece went through the turbo, I could tell something was wrong and I was only a minute from my house. I probably only ran the car for 5 minutes with the turbo in this condition. There is no extra shaft play so I don't think the turbo need a rebuild, but I may go ahead and have it done since I have it off the car already.

Good luck getting those parts. Ussualy most are stuck buying a complete turbo. Your best bet is just replace the comp wheel with a Garrett Gt series wheel of close to the same size (slightly larger). Any turbo shop worth a poop can machine the wheel and your comp housing (and maybe even the back plate) to make it work. I don't know the T88 comp wheel dimensions to be able to reccommed a compairable Garrett wheel.

call greddy and tell them that their own product took out your compressor wheel.

I was kind of afraid of that. I kind of remember GReddy not giveing anyone replacement parts

Talked to kevin at Majestic and someone at forced performance. Both sounded like good shops which could both take care of me. Sounds like Majestic may use a different wheel (garrett maybe) but forced had them in stock (or could get it shortly).

Anyone have a preference to shops? Good guys/bad guys?

If your right in indy I should be able to knock this out for you with either a mitsu or garrett wheel.

You can do the full rebuild in house? PM a price if you don't mind.

:scratches head: Theres not much to go wrong with a wheel. They don't wear out as their is no surface contact with any parts but gases (intake air and turbine exhaust). The only thing that destoyes wheels is debri impact or extremely wore out bearings leading to wheel contact with its respective housing (and ECTREME EGT).

And it probably won't make a lick of difference. This is GReddy (or maybe it's Greedy?) we're talking about. I assume most of you guys have never had the pleasure of dealing with them? Consider yourself lucky!

When my T78 went south, I had Majestic in Waco do the work. They replaced the Mitsu compressor with a Garrett unit which I believe was a "GT55" wheel going by the inducer dimensions. It was a scary turbo but it didn't come on song very well, probably due to a mediocre engine build and a few other factors. Their turn-around is very fast.

You forgot carbon buildup on high mileadge turbos. My KAI had 30k on it when I bought it and it had chips out of the fins from carbon wear. Not a ton, but 30k on a turbo on a rotary isn't very common anyway, LOL!

"had chips out of the fins from carbon wear"

That would be debri damage.

Be it from broken seals, dirt being passed by the engine, or bits of carbon etc.

Yeah, no seals went through it.. I've seen that all too many times.. haha.

I read it so fast, I didn't even see the debri impact you had listed...

*sigh*

I ended up sending the turbo to Forced Performance in Texas becuase they were the only shop i called that could actually get the mitsu parts for T88. I should have it back in a couple weeks and i'll let everyone know how it turned out.

On to my other question. I need to get a different airfilter and I can't take the measurements for the area because i don't have my turbo. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use? I was thinking just a generic K&N and possibily getting a pipe made to route it somewhere else, but i doubt it there will be any room. What are other with the T78/88 turbos running? I'd love to hear some input from you guys.
