Question GReddy SMIC

Quick question.
Is a GReddy SMIC going to be ridiculously inefficient with the rx7store gt40r kit at about 15psi?
I just want to find out if I should use it or suck it up and buy a bigger one...

Are you serious the SMIC will be nowhere near your cooling needs.

What are you talking about? I'm not sure that is true at all. An intercooler is an intercooler. What would you recommend? A 2 row front mount? Like that is any better at all? The greddy stock mount is actually a pretty nice intercooler, it just really needs a nice duct to make it work well. Anyone here actually tried a greddy stock mount with a gt40? Or a 35r for that matter?

I know Greddy makes a 3 row and I believe I heard about a 4 row that is made for supras that are good up to 900 hp. I think as long as your making less than 500 you will be fine running a quality SMIC setup... I really have no idea about their cooling capacity but I would think that a well made, well ducted SMIC will trump a regular FMIC in over all efficiency any day.

That is my experience and impression as well. I'm running a $120 ebay piece of junk on a 35r at 15psi and it is holding 42degree c. intake temps now that it is ducted. Before a duct it was at 65 degrees c. Its still not the best at 42 but it is better than 65. My friend with the twins running 14lbs on a greddy stock mount reads even lower than my 45. It seems like a nice piece to me. I'll likely buy one soon for my setup too.

My old Pettit Coolcharge II which was bigger than the Greddy and was well ducted sometimes had trouble holding good AITs that was on a 12psi stockish setup.

Now if you do a Greddy SMIC with a very high displacement fan on the back with water injection you might be able to get away with it who knows.

I have also had experience with a M2 Large where AIT goes under ambient temps while boosting....

Personally I would go for a large or medium stock mount intercooler, which you can always use a fan on onto of it if you decide to do that later.

Thumbs up

below ambient? thats not even possible is it?
i run the pettit coolcharge III SMIC with a 60-1 garrett and will see intake temps 5-10 degrees above amibient. Correct me if i am wrong but thats pretty damn low.
my intake filter piping is ran underneath my sleek headlight and the filter sits in the front bumper oil cooler opening on the passenger side of the car. Its a huge benifit to get the intake out of the engine bay, otherwise the filter sits directly behind the rad which is dumping heat. Filter placement is a huge contributing factor to low intake temps.

Comparing my intakes temps with a friend with the same setup side by side at a redlight(his intake filter is in the engine bay behind the rad) my intake temps were 14 degrees cooler. That will yield alot of extra power

The first pic show the intake pipe leading under the light, the second shows the piping, with the headlight removed, the third shows the intake filter behind the mesh screen in the right side oil cooler opening in the bumper. works slick

Ben did you relocate your intake temp sensor?
