GR-63 project
The forum is screwing up on me so if this is a duplicate I'm sorry.
Well since I've finished the project I'm going to post my thoughts on it and a bit about the build up.
I blew my motor last year, and after doing things half assed I decided to get it done properly once and for all. So after months of research I finally decided on the GR-63 kit from Gotham Racing. It came with the manifold, DP Turbo, and dual Tial 38mm Wastegates (vented to atmosphere). I upgraded my secondaries to 1600cc's, new fuel regulator and pump. I also upgraded my intercooler with the only SMIC I could really find these days. I tried to get the ASP but it was taking way too long. Did the pulleys with unorthdox. The new motor was built by Mazdees with 3mm seals, street ported and the works.
I started this project in January actually ordering the motor and having it gotten ready. I started order up the parts in january too. I called Gotham Racing and spoke to Steve Khan, he was really helpful in my selection of the GR-63 versus the GR-67. I choose the GR-63 for rather quick spoolup (10PSI @ 3000k) with a large amount of power.
I also ordered some stuff from the RX-7 store swaybars, twin power and some other miscellanous stuff. Everything came in in time except the intercooler DAMN ASP. So in the end I got a used one from Peter Farrell.
We had a few issues here and there as to be expected with any large build. Some clean up on the interior of the manifold and some minor line fitment issues. So Dave at Mazdees did what he does best fabbed some stuff up and got it going. The GR-63 kit is very clean the fitment puts the turbo pretty far up for a nice long DP before the bend. The dual wastegates I think are over kill since they only come vented to atomosphere they just are too damn loud. Dave is working on getting them routed back into the exhaust.
When I first started on boost I couldn't boost properly. It turned out I had a leak off the lower intake hose on the Intercooler. When I fixed that it boosted like mad, until I finally got my HKS EVC5 working right. Stupid thing freaks out and doesn't work if you switch it to popet from swing valve while the power is off.
My first try with proper boost 10PSI scared the crap out of me. The car just drives like a beast from hell. Right now it's super loud on full boost. But it's not just that you have to pay careful attention cause it wants to get really loose on you cause of all the power it's putting down. I have to say I love the setup it is just amazing.
I had originally planned on running 10 PSI normally and 15 PSI when I really wanted to get going. I can't imagine running higher then 10 PSI on the street. It is just insane.
I've attached some pics of the setup and turbo. I'll post more of the current engine bay with everything in it.

There's nothing like a fresh engine and a good turbo kit huh? Just drive it for a while...you'll get used to the power :-) I must admit after working on my car for two months installing the new engine and turbo, the prerequisite hiatus of not driving it for the same amount of time, installing the new engine and turbo, I too was surprised at how powerful 10psi was!

The turbo is .70 a/r Compressor and 1.0 a/r Turbine with a p trim.
Coat the pipes? Coat the DP with a ceramic coating? or just wrap it.
