Question Garret Gt3540 & 3542

After chatting with you guys I decided on a T-66 and just ordered it, now I am seeing and hearing good things about the GT units , how do they compare in performance and price and what are the specs ? (its not too late to change my order).I wnat it for a '95 R1 with haltech , fuel system , intercooler etc. to run 18psi. and make as much power as is possible with a stock block 13B.

The FEED car has the GT3540 on one of their race cars. It made 515ps @ 1.2 bar. I was also talking to a drag racer in Australia, who has it in his car and he runs 10sec 1/4 miles with his. If these weren't so expensive It would be on my wish list , given that it is a ball bearing turbo you can also expect quick spool up time--but keep in mind when its rebuild time.

How much are the GT series turbo's? I've been kinda interested in them. Do they have the same flange as a regular T04?

I contacted Garrett USA about their new GT series turbos and they sent me to several US distibutors, all asking for pretty much my whole ******* in exchange for one of their GT units. Cheapest place I found in the US was $2800 for JUST the GT3540. Went looking elsewhere and found www.rpmperformancecentre.com.au I got the GT3540 for $3385 AUD shipped to my door. Thats about $1700 USD. Owners name is Tim Possingham - very nice guy and very knowledgeable about cars and rotaries. Their 20B drag car just ran a 7.49 @ 174 making them the 2nd fastest rotary (behind Siguel).

They also make custom manifolds, IC, etc. I didn't really like the design of his manifold though (it put the wastgate right under the compressor housing, facing forward) because I wanted my gate plumbed back into the downpipe. Also, the GT units have the same 4-bolt flange as the T04.

I was told by Tim full boost (18 psi) by 3600-4000 rpm. I shall have some real testing here soon...

good I'm interested as always ..... sounds like it really spools up nice. 515 bhp would be real nice number to make if it spools that fast.

This guy is hoping to make 700kW at all four on his R33 GTR, using dual GT3542 turbo's, http://www.exvitermini.com/pr33.htm Go to the link for Movies at the top of the page. All of those videos we're with much smaller HKS 2835's pushing "only" 444kW at all four wheels. They are badass turbos.

cool ... intersting intake manifold ... with that slight angle where the throttle body bolts up ... wonder if they are worried about a cylindar running lean?

What's the reliability of the GT's? I would think that with BB's on both sides, and with many OEM applications that they're more reliable than the standard BB Garrett. If that were the case, the value of a GT turbo would be more justifiable. I would be willing to spend the money if the turbo were one that would last the life of say a normal TO4.

$$$? I've got a fixed quote for a GT35/40 and wastegate of $2600 (that's $1300) How is that 'a lot' ?

The guy who quoted me for the 35/40 was from a place called CES (custom exhaust systems) here in brisbane they don't stock the turbos themselves, but they custom make manifolds, and IC piping and were going to do the work. I never found out who the turbo supplier was directly but I'm 90% sure it's the same guys who did a777's turbo. So you could PM/email him.
