EGT Gauge Reading...

I've searched on this issue and found some good answers but i think i'm having a problem with my gauge or something...

I have this Autometer phantom EGT gauge and it never goes past 400F
http://autometer.com/cat_gaugedetail...gid=2685&sid=7

It takes forever to even move... is the probe fuged up or is this the way it is on this kit that i bought? Is there a better probe that will read faster?

where do you have the guage placed? It should be before the turbo in the mani.

i've heard different things on that... however i have mine on the dp about 5 inches from the turbo... Nevertheless it should still move and not be stuck at one point.....

ya minse about the same and it reaches 1,200 F on cruise. it should easily be passing 400F at idle even.. maybe the probe is no good?

On the race cars i have seen they were 1.5 to 3.0 from turbo on downpipe. They also had probe ahead of the turbo.

Well, no matter where i put it, the damn gauge should move... Like i said... it get's to 400 and it doesn't move from there... Maybe when i Wot it then it moves about 50 more, but that's it.

I'm going to try one of the more expensive probes... eventually, and see how that works out....

Not to thread jack but I have throwing around the possibility of using a dual egt gauge setup for individual rotors. I was wondering is there a suggested manufacturer to look to for a dependable lasting probe. I plan on using the standard K type thermo. Any suggestions or thoughts, I had heard of issues with some probes breaking off and destroying turbos and don't want to take that chance.

The entry level EGT probe is CRAP.
Get at least the middle one.
I think it's the "competition" level EGT probe?
The most expensive one doesn't perform that much better, so if you're on a budget, just get the middle one.

It's not the probe !! the street EGT gauge and probe works just fine ! I've installed and removed three of those gauges and probes , and I've had the same problem ! sometimes it would even flicker about wildly . I've found that this is caused when theprobe shorts out on itself , what happens is the heat from the exhaust is soo intense it causes the insullation on the WIRE or the shrink wrap to melt , which allows the actual wires to come into contact. You just need to disconnect the probe ,separate the wires to a point where the insullation is intact , reinsullate (making sure there is no contact what so ever) and re connect the probe.
