DIY wastegate

Hello guys.

Well i managed to pick up a loverly new turbo for my loverly new 13b engine but now im looking for a wastegate.

Considering i have a machine shop at my disposal i thought i might have a go at making my own. It's a pretty simple device but i thought i would ask if anyone had any experiance of doing this.

if your interested the turbo is :

Garrett T04 E64
P/N 465117 4275B
Compressor A/R 0.7
Turbine A/R 1.3

Cheers

Glenn

Dude, just buy one. Don't re-invent the wheel. Check ebay for specials. A Wastegate is too important to "home-Depot" it. You could overboost, and pop your engine.

Have at it!

Another forum member just made his own as well. Not like it is hard if you know your way around a machine shop.

Just remember the materials it is made of are important as high rotary heat can fuse metals together a bit where the valve seals on the seat and cause overboost-especially if you use antilag. Most use a stainless valve and a cast iron seat/body, but the best use a special (high nickel?) stainless alloy for valve and seat/body or cast stainless alloy seat/body.

If you want the best WG you will probably have to buy one (Tial)- unless you have some real connections to get the alloyed stainless stock.

Ok I'll answer your queries in order

82streetracer: Im planning on making ~40mm external wastegate.

Directfreak: but I want to make my own . I have made all sorts off stuff in the past from manifolds to pistons so a wastegate should be pretty easy really.

BLUE TII: any idea who the other guy was, maybe he would share some info ?? I already have some stainless valves which would be suitable 4n21 stainless which is about as heat resistant as you can go apart from sodium cored.

HWO: any idea what materials he uses ?? how much do they cost ?

cheers guys

Glenn

I have heard that there are problems with stainless components cracking, as is the case with my apex kit. There is definately a leak in mine somewhere, but I can't say if it's a gasket, weld, or malfunctioning wastegate. Comes from the wastegate somewhere.
