which compressor wheels make strange noises?

this may sound like a ricer question, but which turbo compressor wheels make the strange high pitched whistling sound? now i'm not talking about the sucking sound with a bit of high pitched wheezing, i'm talking very loud high pitched sucking/whistling sound... one turbo i'm thinking of in particular is a t51r kai... know what i mean? what other turbo compressors make these types of sounds?

I have heard (hearsay -- not "heard" the turbos myself) that turbos with the anti-surge compressor housings make these sounds.

I think the GT40R has an anti-surge housing, so if my theory is correct it should make the noise. Pics in this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/single-turbo-rx-7s-23/new-gt40-88mm-94-hot-side-396708/

I don't recall if the GT35R has an anti-surge housing or not, but I think it doesn't.

The R85 has an anti-surge housing, and judging by the whistling I have heard from mine so far (still driving slow with no/low boost for break-in), I am expecting it to make some noise once I open it up. Pics of the turbo here: http://kgparts.com/R85.htm

My SR KKK has an anti-surge housing as well, and it definitely makes an ear piercing whistle...

Mine ( gt40r) is noticeable even with the filter on and at super low boost I am only running 10-12 psi right now. Will record/video tape once I get it tuned for higher boost.

Davinci Motorworks has a Af22 single kit that sounds like my T51R KAI. It sells for a fraction of the cost of my T51R KAI too.

Yup, the sound your looking for is from turbo's with a ported shroud / anti-surge compressor housings. Its the air bleeds near the compressors inducer that makes this sound. Ported shrouds / anti-surge housings give up a few points in effeciency in the mid to higher right side of the comp map for better surge protection (left side of the maps). On our cars its nothing more then a novelty noise maker, I don't see anyone making boost so fast that these turbo's are near the surge zone (typically you see these housings only on larger frame turbos).

so the ONLY turbos that make the high pitched whistling sound are the ones with the anti surge comp housings?
